Curious whether to switch to Synthetic
 

I just picked up a 2000 Bonn SSEi with 93,500miles. It was traded in at a dealer and i got a good price for it. It has regular oil in it and wanted to switch to amsoil. As I was told by a friend, he says since its had regular fluid all its life. He said the amsoil would clean it out and damage the car. Is this right, because i want to flush the tranny, put a tranny cooler on with shift kit, and put in amsoil ATF and 5w-30 engine oil. The car already has CAI and 3.4" pulley 180 thermostat, and plugs are coming on next week.

On topic, switch to synthetic oil any time you like. We've never seen an issue, even on extremely high-mileage 3800's.

Do NOT use a synthetic or synthetic-blend ATF. Make sure you know what Amsoil is using.

Agreed...I changed my 97 SSEi to syn at 133K .. now it's at 163K

My car runs fine (aside for the busted fuel pump fuse :evil: ) with synthetic in it, and I think the performance is a tad better. The convienience of an oil you change every 15k miles is worth the high price

Yes indeed, synthetic oil is the boss! My car was developing a lifter tick and was getting o.k. gas mileage. I switched to synthetic and almost immidiately my tick went away, my oil pressure has since been higher, and my gas mileage has improved drastically!

As for ATF...like Bill said, stay away from it, just use a high quality ATF from a well known company and flush and change the filter at the recommended intervals and you're set!

Willren: may I ask why synthetic ATF should be used? (in the tranny, that is).

I've used synthetic in my motor since 137k when I bought her and more then 20k since then and no problems (sticking to 3k changes)

I just switched my 98 to synth. Only difference I've noticed is that the pressure gauge doesn't wander as much as it used to.

I run synthetic in all my vehicles, I know that my trucks gas mileage went up 20% all the way around, and the 5K interval is nice, especially in the winters.........

Best thing you can do IMO.....
