Chipped Windshield
 

My windshield has a little chip in it...I was doing about 75 down I-90 a few weeks ago and something unidentifiable hit me. I've been trying to ignore the mark...was hoping I could wash it off :oops: Is this something that will cause worse issues later if I leave it be or is the whole 'it'll turn into a crack and ruin your windshield' thing just a myth? I try to avoid mechanics and the like whenever possible because they tend to try to take advantage of me and it's tiresome-so I thought I'd ask you guys for advice first.

A chip will turn into a big ugly crack in the cold weather especially,
you can take your car to an AutoGlass store and they can fill the chip. Basically making it invisible and it will prevent it from cracking, saves alot of money in the long run!

the chip can definately turn into a crack. Do you carry comprehensive on your auto insurance? If you do, your company may waive the deductible to repair the windshield in order to avoid having to pay to replace the windshield. It is better to get it fixed before you turn on the heat and send that crack moving across your windshield

filling it is half worthless my father used to be in glass business just put some superglue in it if its not to big or deep and you'll be good thats what got done to mine

actually about the chip filling thing you can buy a kit and do it your self, thats if you dont want to try the superglue..which actually sounds like it would quite well!
Anyways in the kit you get a syringe filled with the compound used and u kind of inject it into the chip...ive never used one but ive seen them for sale befor.

wooooo....The kit thing sounds like it might be about my speed..I'm afraid of trying the superglue thing because, knowing me, without explicit directions, I'll just make a mess...and if the kit doesn't work then I can give up and take it to the glass experts.

No matter what, fix the chip before a crack develops. Being fast on this will ensure a very low cost repair fee.

when i called my insurance company to get my windshield replaced, they asked me how big the crack was. it was a 4 footer by then ! lol they said they have a new process where they can fix cracks up to 2 inches. anyone ever hear of this ? i always thought once it cracks its dead. i will make sure mine is cracked far beyond 2 inches before i ever call for a replacement. i want a new one !

A chip or a crack will also wear out your wiper blades more quickly.

I carry a low deductible for glass. I get a new windshield at least every 2 years.
