Post Muffler Advice

Well my stock muffler is on it'* way out. I'm looking for a new one that will sound good for about $40-$50. I'm considering a Thrush muffler (because they are relatively cheap and I can get them from the local Advance Auto), but I'm not sure which to choose: Turbo, Welded or Glasspack.

-Which type of muffler do you guys think would sound best?

-Do you have any other brands/suggestions in my price range?

-Can anyone tell me what size my pipes are? I believe they are 2.5" but need someone to confirm this.

Thanks for your help.

2.5" inlet on the muffler. I use a flowmaster series80. I like the tone. Each car will sound different. Best to talk to a good muffler shop and see what they say, but for the most part, a series80 for a single muffler, or series40 for dual will sound the best.

NO!

Unless you have a gigantic resonator in there, a thrush muffler will sound like ***. Its very difficult to make these 3800'* sound good. The best 3800 muffler is a quiet muffler. If you want louder on a stock engine, your safest bet is a magnaflow, because it will reduce most rasp and to a low rumble/drone.

That being said, I'm getting a 3" thrush turbo muffler on my 95 Regal, but I'm also getting a large resonator, and headers to make it sound slightly better, and a complete 3' exahust. Turn up the volume and listen to this. This guy has the same headers I'm getting on my car, but no catalytic converter, no resonator, and no mufflers.

It sounds great at idle, but the moment he revs it a bit higher, you start to understand why I put a big "NO" in the beginning of this post. Loud 3800'* do not sound good, and thrush welded mufflers are loud. On other forums, we refer to 3800'* with loud mufflers as chainsaws, because at higher revs, that'* what they sound like. As I mentioned, your safest bet is a magnaflow.

Here are a couple videos with magnaflows on that engine:

Don't you also have a cam and a plethora of other engine modifications that will make it sound completely different from a stock 3800?

Here'* a video I got that shows what I'm talking about in regard to chainsaw sound with a stock 3800 on a chambered muffler (such as a flowmaster).

Yes, I'm cammed, ported, headers, free flow cat, 3" down pipe. Here'* a video of mine.

Each thing you do to the engine will effect the tone. A series80 muffler will sound good, but will have rasp at higher RPMs. That'* just how a v6 is, not much can be done about it.

Right, but those headers, cam, and ported heads will make a huge difference in making that 3800 sound better on a chambered muffler. I'll bet it sounds downright sexy.
