Custom Ram Air


I started to work on my custom ram air intake on 07/28/03 here are the pictures from the initial work. Some of the things I went overboard on but once I got started there was no turning back.

This is where I cut the metal behind the head light to make room for the 3" PVC. I will be finishing this off by smothing out the edges and primering and painting the cuts so they do not rust.

This is the modified stock air box with the PVC installed in the opening I cut. I cut out a notch out of the entire side trying to center with the filter instead of using just one side of it.

Notice the PVC is lower then the original intake hole. I had to do this because there isn't much room behing the headlight. At the position I have it I still can add a 90 degree elbow and have it directed toward the lower air dam. First Picture is from instide the air box, second is from outside the air box.

I had to cut some off of the headlight mount and grind some off of the frame where the bumber mounts up. I didn't grid very much, so I don't have to worry about loosing any support.

I used some thick plastic I found laying around the shop to cover the old intake hole. I also painted the entire thing black. FYI this actually looks pretty good, the flash from the camera made the paint look weird when it hit the gloss black.

Here is what the intake looks like install into the hole I cut behind the light. Next I will be working on making it functioning ram air. From this point I will run a 90 degree elbow and have it running to the lower air dam to catch the air.

I plan on it. I was quite impressed with myself. I did all of this in about 2 hours. I t shouldn't take me long to finish it but will have to wait for my day off. Even just doing this my rpm's at 75mph went down from 2300 to 2100 a 200rpm drop. Tested on the same stretch of road with cruise control. When I get it finished I will problably mount a cone K&N filter in the stock box and get rid of the K&N flat filter.

My rpms cruising at 90mph steady, are at 2400-2500. :D Would that change if I had this ram air? That is low already.

Why are you even keeping the stock box?

Because at this point I don't have the money to spend on the supplies I would need to build my own box, not even speaking for the pipe and K&N cone filter. The way I have it designed I will just be able to switch it over when I get the money. I already have the K&N Flat Filter and I will probably figure something out for a prefilter if needed, I will run it for a while when I get it completed to see how dirty it will get. So far I have spent about $10 on the PVC pipe. Not bad for ram air.

dang.. wish i had the skills to do something like that

when you get it done and if it works really good you shoudl type up some steps on how to amke it

I have been taking pics so I everybody can see the steps but I will try and type something up. Hopefully I will have it finished today or tommorrow.

Looks good so far.. but with a functional ram air to the air duct you're refering to.. how are you going to prevent rain ( snow if it applies with salt ) from entering into the airbox? ( even though my dryer duct method which isn't as good lookin or linear as yours is may not be that great.. but at the same token.. when it rains and such.. I can just shove it back into the bumper so it doesn't ram up the water and such ).. How would all the rain water affect an Oiled filter?? Would it push some of the oil into the intake? I'm interested too.. ( since up here.. anythin that looks like aftermarket CAI you will get a ticket for since cops are being pricks up here.. I would like to keep as much of the stock look as possible )..

on a side note.. if I was to get metal tubing to run from the aribox into the TB.. will the accordian tubin be big enough to cover that up? or is there one that is bigger to allow that so externally it looks stock? ( a half ass heat shield too I suppose )
