Those times are way unrealistic, Just to give you an idea of times we had to change a frame on a chevy 1500 pickup (199 and it paid 21 hours. Someone would have to be crazy to tell a customer that it took 30 hours to take an engine out and put ia different one in.

Matt, can yo use any 3.4 block on the motor to rebuild it? The only damage would be a crank and one rod really. You could swap it out yourself, i know you've got the knowledge, and your relative'* shop.

they could be right, after a little googling, I read something about more than 2 hours of labour for anything other than an oil change

I have no time with work. Sorry guys as beautiful as it is, its my calling, to drive a 3800 powerd car. Still, words do not describe what I think of that car, actually, the censorship on this forum does not allow me to. lol

$#@^
Either way your out of 2grand... but if you get a loan and what not to do the engine rebuild you will atleast have something to show for it...
Think about it this way if you will... what does the least expisive new GM car cost? 10,800... (sunflower)
If you rebuild your car it will be Basicly... New... How much is a brand new mid luxo. car with lots of great options, ect. leather. cruise. cd player. ac.? (30-40) ... I know your laughing, but you dont get any of that with a 10,800 sunflower... so why not spend 8grand and have a brand new mid luxo car? (same little quilt trip you can put to use on your parents)
Michner allan is having an auction in the morning till about 3pm in edmonton... I can pretty expect a car like that to be there, and sell cheap... but how long will that engine last?

-also.. you can do what the guy did prevously... Hide the knock...

After further thought.. you dont need a full rebuild... just get the engine yanked put it on a stand, filp it over... take the crank out, send it to get rebuilt.. then get it all put back together by a qualified shop.

Easier said than done on the 3.4 DOHC.

Most all good shops use all data for times quotes. I faintly remember replacing a 3.4 back when I was working at a shop and it took me a little over 16 hours, Also the guy I worked with could replace a 3800 in a 4-5 hours. Replacing an engine isnt as hard as most may think, I take a little longer whenever I do one for myself because I clean the engine bay and usually lay some new paint in there.

I still think ditching it (perfect body BTW) will be a waste of money. You could easily get the crank and such turned for less then 1k if you do it right, and do the work yourselves. Just add it to the cost of the car in the end, and you have yourself a NEW car.
