Anyone still running a 195 T-stat?
SInce nearly everyone here has switched over to ruinning a cooler T-stat, I was wondering whether or not anyone has decided to stick with the 195 or switch back to a 195 on their Bonneville's. If so, why? Just curious
|
Although I have not personally done this, some reasons I can think of why people would switch back to the 195 or keep the 195 is because:
1) They don't care about performance so it doesn't matter. 2) They want their heat to be warmer in the winter. 3) They want to keep the engine running warm to make sure the spark plugs don't foul out and the car maintains good gas mileage. Other than that, I don't why someone would leave it in or switch back. |
There's laziness too, guys. Some of us are just REALLY friggin lazy...

I still have the 195* in mine. I was under the impression that the only real gains from installing a 180 or colder would be by the supercharged cars? Would my NA 3800 see any performance benifits?
|
I fall in to the lazy category myself. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
And it shouldn't affect the heat. The engine will still get to the same temp, the thermostat just opens sooner allowing coolant circulation earlier. Right? |
Think I will stay with the stock 195. Gets pretty cold here in the winter.
|
I've changed mine to a drilled 180 for the summer months, then I'll re-install the stock 195 for the winter months. It gets pretty frekkin cold up here! :x

Thermostats
I have seen a lot of chatter on here about switching to a 180 thermostat. I don't see the big advantage. The design of the engine is for a 195 thermostat. The thermostat attempts to keep the engine temp at a particular level, if it can. The downside has got to be efficiency.
I'd like to see if anyone has actually measured a performance gain with this mod, or if it is just an old wive's tale. Hey, why not just take out the 'stat all together. :) Here in the northeast, most months you want the hot stat in there. The only months that don't matter are June, july and Aug. Steve |

Also .... it gets really cold here in the winter... and I need all the extra heat I can get. In the summer... it's rare for a day to be +28c... and summer only lasts 3 months (June/July/August). I wish I lived in Florida, or Texas or somewhere... no more winter...no snow... no ice... no salt... I hate the salt most of all. :x |
I'm lazy as well, I will get it soon though. I hope this doesn't make me a bad guy.

Mine is still 195
I haven't done it yet because I just found this place and haven't had my Bonne that long. And as stated the 180 will only open up sooner but not necessarily make/let the car run cooler. My experience says that your coolant system must be running properly in the first place. Then the fans need to come on at the lower temp or you have high air flow going through the radiator some how i.e. driving faster than say normal  or a modification of some sort But I still will be installing a 180 t-stat and some how changing the fans to come on at 180. Just bought my '00 Bonnie SSEi,....I'll be leaving the 195* stat in the car.I don't see any advantage in using a 180 or ,heaven forbid,a 160*stat....car was designed with a 195 stat(as are all the GM cars),...designed optimal running temp for emissions system, spark plugs,etc..Temp gauge has NEVER climbed above the 200*mark ....OR dropped below the 200* mark, for that matter(but that is another strange issue that I've posted about, and haven't been able to figure out just why...never seen a car's temp gauge that's done that?),..definately need the warm heater factor during the Upstate NY Winters.IMO,can't see where a 15* drop/lowering of the cooling system will make any kind of noticable difference as far as performance goes.....so I'll be keeping the 195 stat

My car hits 215, I need a 180.
|
It was stated in earlier posts by GM mechanics that running the 180 stats will benefit the engine. The Plastic Upper intakes will last longer if you do that. Also it helps cool down the Supercharged cars because we don't have a stock intercooler.
I changed out mine and if just takes 5 minutes longer for the engine to get to temperature and she doesn't spike as hard on warm days in traffic. If it's 100 out though, i still get up to about 210. |
