Rear defog?

Rear defog?
Got one for someone that knows more about this than I do. When I have selected the rear defogger and I am driving slow in traffic it will 'time out' after about 10 min. or so and shut off...like it should. However, while driving on the highway, if you turn it on, it will remain on the whole time you are on the highway. :?
I have heard of other GM cars having a feature that over 80 km/h (50 mph) the RW defog is programed to stay on. Is that the case in the Bonne? :?:
This is the only thing that I can think is causing this to happen. Otherwise...this sucker is going back while it is still under warranty.
Someone must know for sure...

The owner'* manual should be detailed on this subject. Mine is. Mine is on for 10, then the following cycles are only 5, unless I stop and restart the car.
I'd bet if yours has the speed feature, the owner'* manual will tell you.

The problem is that the car came with a 2000 book and the car is an '01. The dealer said they did not get the book fromt the original owner, and all they had was a 2000. I could always purchase one...but we have BC!!
Anyone have a '01 SLE book that they can look this up for me?

When you turn ON the ignition and press the rear window defogger switch for the first time, the defogger cycle lasts 10 minutes. Further operation results in 5 minute defogger cycles. The defogger cycle resets to 10 minutes when you cycle the ignition to the OFF position and then back to the ON position.
The rear window defogger feature will not time out if the vehicle speed is above 48 km/h (30 mph).
If the battery voltage is very low, the rear window defogger feature is disabled

bonnevilledad, I looked in my ownwers manual (01 SLE),and it'* exactly what Pontiacdad quoted in his reply. I thought there was a website that has PDF files of these Owner'* Manuals?

That certainly explains it!
It is interesting that they think that over 30 that thing should stay on. Considering the amount of driving I do on the highway, i am wondering if my rear window defogger or one of the heated mirrors will burn out over time? I would think they must be designed for continous use...but who knows? Has anyone had any experience with one of those parts burning out?

I don't know that it is possible for them to "burn out" as they are just very thin stips of copper. Usually, the only time they quit working is if they are physically damaged (scratched, peeled off, etc.) Plus, you have the option of just hitting the button to turn them off...
