Why is it that the factory cat costs so much? A guy i work with got quoted 800 dollars to get the cat in his explorer changed at the dealer, then went to a muffler shop and got a magnaflow put on for 150. Are the factory cats that expensive?

Someone tried stealing the CAT off of my 95 last time I had work getting done on it.
They got 2 or 3 others form that garage over that weekend too.
I just don't get it.
Glad to hear that it worked out good for you, though.

30.00 a gram for platinum ???? interesting.
With approximately 700 catalytic converters producing one metric ton of materials, over 21,400 metric tons could be obtained from the 15 million autos that are junked annually in the United States. With a current average value of $21,426 per metric ton for the three grade types (based on March 13, 1998 prices), over $450 million worth of platinum-grade metals could be recovered from these used catalytic converters.
