I bought a 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP convertible model.......I didn't even look at it before I bought it.....The thousand dollar price was a killer deal........even though I had to replace the engine. Anyhow, I thought all GTP models had the supercharger. But this car does not. That'* pretty much the main reason I wanted the GTP version.

I actually loved the hard top convertible.......

Just felt it had too much flimsy plastic exposed when the top was going up/down....

The hydraulic system was pretty good...never had to make a repair on it....

There was only on problem......before that 3yr/36K BTB warranty was up, or in some cases with extended warranties, they came in time and time again for rattles.......you would make adjustments, there were several TSB'*, go for a road test, bring it back, more adjustments.......rattle would be gone, and then they would be back a month or two later,,,,

When it first came out, we wondered how long it would be before they would be coming in, for breaking that rear glass......not too many, until we talked to a local glass installer.....he saw lots of them....mainly, stupidity on the customer'* part....

For 1K, that looks like one hell of a deal....only problem I remember with those engines was the coolant crossover pipe between the heads....gasket would leak......low coolant light would come on, and customers would still drive and overheat it....

Ok, so here'* the story:

I see the car posted for sale on craigslist in the city of Sacramento......90 miles away from my house. I call the seller. She informs me that her husband looked at the engine and said the engine threw a rod and that the engine needed to be replaced.

I decided not to buy the car....an hour passes and I was just curious as to what the blue book value is on this car (I have never seen a convertible GTP until now). KBB value is $7,500......WHAT THE HECK!!!! So I call the owner back and say I will buy the car tomorrow. She says someone is coming to look at it in a few hours, but the first person with cash gets the car.......So I hop in my super fast Ferrari (AKA Scion xB Toaster Van) and I drive down to Sacramento and pay her for the car, telling her I will be back for it tomorrow and trailer it home.

No prob.

The next day, I borrow a Suburban and rent a trailer............The Suburban has a busted tail light........on the way to Sacramento, I see an auto recycling yard along the side of the highway........I pull into the yard to buy a used tail light.......I look to my left and see a 3.9 Liter engine sitting there. Pure luck.

I tell the recycler that I want to buy the engine for this Pontiac G6.....the employee tells me it might not fit, and that I need to know what the engine code is in the car VIN number.........so, off I go to pick up the car.

On the way back home, I pull back into the yard with the car, verify that the engine will fit. The engine is from a 2006 Impala Super Sport, or maybe it was from a 2006 Malibu Maxx SS.....anyhow

I get the engine home, I have to swap over the oil pan, the intake manifold, the water X over pipe, the fuel injectors....couple other things.

I install the engine into the G6.......

End of story right?.......Wrong.

I am curious about the rod being thrown......I look and see no rod thrown. I see the oil pump is intact. I see the cam shaft is not broken. I dig a little more and I finally see the damage..........turned out to be the timing chain tensioner had cracked and there was no tension on the chain.....lots of slack.

I buy a new timing chain tensioner, install it, put all the old parts back on the engine: oil pan, intake, water pipe, etc..... I prime the engine block with oil using the oil pump.

I do a compression test.......150psi across the board.

Crank shaft endplay is good, rod bearings plasti guage within specs, looks like I may have a good engine.

I actually feel these type of engines (3100-3900 series) have issues with the intake manifolds sealing properly......so when I took it apart, I reassembled using The Right Stuff sealant on everything, oil pan, timing chain cover, valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets.

While the engine was out, I also replaced the head gaskets, the trans input shaft seal.

While working under the car, I could see how GM installed extra braces on the under carriage. To retain the unibody strength......I love GM vehicles, but I have got to say, the reinforcement pieces used underneath the car look like something cobbled together from a scrap metal yard. Just tacky. I realize, under neath the car will hardly ever bee seen, but the welds look sloppy, the bolts look like they came from a small Mom & Pop hardware store. The reinforcement rails aren't even boxed....not even channeled.......It'* just thick flat metal with holes punched in them. That being the case, the car rides great.

I can see how the convertible car exhaust is different than the non convertibles.......GM had to make the exhaust pipe a smaller diameter and use more bends to get past the cheap reinforcement braces on the convertible.

I actually sold the car earlier today.....I never planned on keeping it. Just a quick flip. As mentioned in an earlier post, the KBB suggested value is right around $7,500.......I didn't get any where near that amount. I sold the car for $5,500.

The car is so clean, I know I could have got the KBB value if I had time to wait it out. But my best friend of 34 years committed suicide last Saturday, so I'm buying a burial plot to help ease the financial burden. I already transferred the $$$ into thier gofundme account under the name Anonymous Detonator.....hahaha, my friend used to work demolition explosives for a large company. I kept $500 from the sale of the vehicle, so me and the kiddo'* will be heading to the beach next weekend.
