3800 Series II Reference Pictures

I cannot think of the number of times someone has said something about a particular part on this engine that I had no clue as to WHERE or WHAT it was. I am sure we have a number of members that have little or no knowledge of engines period.

I am one of them also. Well, as far as naming that part.

After I pulled this engine, I was amazed at the number of sensors this engine has. Nor can I name half of them.

So, I hope the admins and the powers that be, please come in here and edit this post to reflect the correct part identifications on the various photo's. I will leave space between each photo for comments etc.

I also give permission to those that are putting a project together for the tech forum for use of these pictures and ones contained in my other transmission thread.

Also, please link these pics into other threads if needed. For example, someone is asking about removing the O2 sensor, but does not have any clue to what it is, or where it's at. Use these pics for that purpose.

Also, please no comments about how dirty it is, the leaks or what have you. This is for reference only.

CRANK PULLY / HIDDEN SENSOR UPPER LEFT ??? Camshaft Sensor
http://www.kc2jga.com/CRANKPULLEY.JPG
TPS AND OTHER SENSORS Upper right is MAF, upper left is IAC
http://www.kc2jga.com/TPS.JPG

Don't know this one either EGR Valve The pipes bring exhaust gases from the rear manifold into the EGR valve and it then meters the amount that is allowed to pass into the lower intake manifold.

Ummm, I forgot this one.... Fuel pressure Regulator
http://www.kc2jga.com/MISC9.JPG

PCV Valve is located under the cover.

LEFT SIDE OF OIL PAN AND 2 SENSOR. 1 IS OIL LEVEL AND OTHER???? Knock Sensor..
http://www.kc2jga.com/LFTSIDEOILPAN.JPG

Don't know these ones either. The round shiney plug is a freeze plug, the sensor is a knock sensor.

http://www.kc2jga.com/MISC13.JPG

OIL FILTER BRACKET AND SENSOR FOR??? That is actually the oil filter adapter (they used the same engine in many applications and changed the adapter depending on room in the body/frame) and the sensor is for oil pressure.

Please put up a picture of the crank sensor..this is located on the front right of the crank.

Ok Boosty, I ran through and made the corrections. Also added the Crank sensor pic. Thanks for helping me fill in the gaps!!

Apparently my host is having server issues.

BillBoost37 08-09-2006 04:06 PM

Thank You for posting these pics. Had a Service Engine Soon light related to the EGR valve but Chiltons diagram for where it was located on my engine was confusing. Thanks to your detailed pics I was able to find it and clean it up. A new gasket and the light is out.

Not on ant series 2 I've worked on. And this is a old thread.

SAMzGXP 05-29-2011 03:13 AM

wow! welcome back from the dead! lol

but yeah definitely a lot of good info, always wondered were the knock sensor was

SnappyJo 02-04-2017 02:15 PM

I realize this is an old post, but I cannot view the labeled photos and NEED them!

Mike 02-04-2017 08:31 PM

What are you trying to figure out?

SnappyJo 02-05-2017 11:28 AM

I've replaced the UIM on a 1997 Buick LeSabre. Now putting everything else back on and would like a reference photo to be sure I'm the harness and wiring and stuff the same way it was. I did not take pictures of the engine before I started, and first time doing this didn't realize how many different things I would be taking off. This project had no rush time, so working on it a little almost each day...don't have the sequence of removal and little details fresh in my head to go the reverse order. Also finding little brackets and braces I've removed, but not sure exactly from where....haha

...and I need some kind of bolt identification, I realize I missed putting a bolt back in the bracket behind the manifold which has the bar holding the alternator, but not sure which bolt goes there. I'm sure about the 3 bolts to the alternator, but from what I have left.....ummmm..? Can you describe bolts?
