I think the biggest issue with a bonneville parts database will br online space. The java program will be fairly simple. Your just gona work with SO many parts on a car. multiply that by the number for years yout covering and holy ****! you may be able to save space because gm recycles parts you can reference a part multiple times for the years it was used.

If you guys need help I have expierence and will lend a helping hand

I was thinking a set up where you type in the name of the part you are looking for and it gives all parts that match and the years used.
ie. alternator 91-99/ GM #123456
00-03/ GM #132456
If they can't figure out what year car they have and which part to get, they need a bicycle. If I had the bandwidth and a good router could I set it up on a 10gig imac? Have the server out of my house?

The problem is what do you CALL each part? Example: A power steering pump is referred to as "reservoir kit, pump".

Or the little cover around the base of the turn signal lever is "Cap, housing end".

Trans mounts are "Braces".

The Strut tower brace is a "Upper tie bar"

See the problem? How do you make it searchable in a case like that?

Put it exactlly as it is in the book, and maybe break it down into a search wher first it ask what part of the car. ie interior, exterior, eletrical, engine internal, blah, blah, blah. then type in the specific part within that catergory. Kind of like the search on Kelly Blue Book site. Firts make then maodle then year so on and so forth.

You want to be able to regerence each part EXACTLY as it is reference by gm what you may want to do is include a discription describing what the part is.

This would make the fields on a part

Part Number
Year(*)
part name
description

This way you find a part by part number or name and year and have a description of what is is so you are sure it'* what you want. A more processor intensive search could search the descriptions for key words even

One other thing I'd like to add is is we put alot of work into this we may want to limit access to bonneville club member ONLY. just a thought

I agree on the club member only deal. I'm not a computer sauvy person so I don't know how to write the program but I will do any data entry needed.. I'm running a mac so i'm not sure what compatability issues ther may be if any but like I said I will do whatever I can to see this happen.

As Will has already said.....GM itself has changed the "Names" of exact same items from year to year & model to model too. Believe me it'* a constant pain in the arse at work for me. IE: Coolant Level Sensor can also be called a Module, Probe &/Or Switch! It all depends on the year & model of vehicle!
