birthday reminder

Seems like with more and more ppl joinin this site.. and everyone wants to let everyone else know their birthday.. that maybe we can add a "birthday notice" at the bottom near whose online to let everyone know whose birthday is coming up ( I've seen it done on other boards.. but thought it would be cool here ) so we can post whore all about it in lounge to wish them a happy birthday without them having to post first. ( kinda like a bonnevilleclub happy birthday card.. )

And that way EVERYBODY will know exactly how old we "old" people really are???? I'm not sure most younger members will like knowing that some of us here are actually old enough to be their fathers!

I have seen it done as well. Kind of a neat feature 8)

Or grandfathers....in some cases

Respect the wide ranges in ages...I have seen as young as 13 and as old as....well, who knows...

I know with the invision board software, in your profile you put your birthday and on the main page there is a section that will show who's birthday it is and yes their age, lol. not sure about PHPBB having it.

Humm.. well what about instead of showing age.. just a rough designation such as 18 and under " teenie Bopers" 60+ "wheres my walker" kinda thing instead of showing age.. and leave that part to the discretion of the persons birthday..

Mice.. anyway of findout out if it's possible here?

CraZyDriVer868 10-03-2003 09:39 AM

we can do that on MNBC.....check it out here

http://www.mnbonnevilleclub.com/calendar.php

we got some stuff on that...we could do birthdays on there duno bout reminders though...cept if smeone checks it often!

Well, the birthday idea os good. When I set up MNBC I did look into this a little bit and here is what I found:

1) To add them to our calander would be too labor intensive. Imageine 1500+ entries within 365 days for BC!?! It would be hard to keep track of any actual events that may show up.

2) There are add-on mods for phpbb2 that will allow users to enter their b-day into a field. Their b-day would then be shown at the bottom of the forum on the day that thier b-day is. The problem with this way is that the add-on has been know to be DB intensive and cause slowing of the site. Considering we already have occasional "brown outs" due to heavy traffic or what not, this wouldn't be suggested. It may make things even slower.

3) The most plausable option would be to add another field under the users id (where location and stuff is) that they can enter in their b-day. This would be realatively easy to do compared to options 1 and 2. It would also have to admin/mod overhead to administer.

my $1.73...

Just have the DD/MM, that way no age is given if someone is sensitive about it. If someone wants to tell their age, they can post it.
