Default Performance woes

Perhaps the mechanics I've been to in the last 3 weeks are right in that I am pretty picky about how my Bonnie shreds the pavement, but in my opinion, there'* something not quite right with the way it performs. Which is only more aggrivating, considering I had preventive maint. done on it 3 months ago. Prior to the work that was done, I would zoom up 10% graded hills easily at about 68 MPH in overdrive with the Boost guage reading around +1 to 2, and the tach at about 1900 which is awesome in the Ozark hills of SW MO. My highway mileage was around 30 and in town about 24. I was super happy. So, I decide it'd be a good idea to get it to the local Pontiac dealership to have it gone through and action taken as necessary. The phone rings at work the next day after I brought it in for me to come get it. The work was finished. The Supercharger gasket had been changed, the throttle body had been cleaned, the spark plugs had been changed, oil, oil and fuel filters as well, and it was discovered that the control unit for my traction control, shift mode, and ride mode options needed to be replaced (for a paltry sum of $1500... maybe next year ^_^). I picked it up and drove it off... to find... my Bonnie struggling on a hill. "What'* going on here?" I thought. So yeah... that was 4 months ago. I've taken it to 3 different mechanics (including the dealership I had taken it to for the service work) and they can't seem to find anything wrong with it. I did mention to them what I had done and that I thought perhaps the SC gasket wasn't seated properly, was defective, etc. I'm not positive if that would be the most likely case, but it was one that came to mind. One machanic I took it to said that my "blower is working fine, but the gaugeis reading a tad low, about mabye .5 to 1 psi lower than it should. I did pull the Tranny fluid dipstick and found that the fluid smelled a little burnt, although it was still pinkish-red. My in town mileage is about 19-20 and highway 25-27. I now struggle to pull hills of about 5% grade in OD at 60-65, tach around 2000 until the tranny downshifts (tach then usually reading 2700-2800. The boost climbs okay in OD until it gets to 0, afterwhich it doesn't seem to matter how far I press down on the accelerator, I only get a climb of about 2-3 before the tranny downshifts 1 sometimes even 2 gears (but only 2 gears on steeper hills, naturally) and the boost climbes to 5-6. Now... I DO know that the dealership mechanic didn't replace the spark plug wires. I've meaned to test them myself, but stopped short because I thought that if they were bad, at least ONE of the mechanics I took it too would have found that they were. But, they've all said "I don't know how you expect to get more "get up and go" out of that thing, Dave." Well, I was getting up and going alot quicker before than now, so I'm pretty sure something is out of whack. Also, I should note that the car has stalled a few times, but only on cold start ups going up a nearby hill or two, so I haven't really worried too much about that, thinking that that would be a natural thing for it to do. I'm not sure what brand of plugs they put in, but I know they're platinum and I assume they're ACDelco, since the GM dealers use ACDelco parts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm going back to the dealership tomorrow for more diagnosis.

Iceman, welcome to the Bonneville Club! If you put your year and model in your sig, it'll help alot with future posts. There are differences between the years, and we have to know what year you're talking about.

After reading your problems, one of the first things I'd suggest is to check all 'possibilities', and eliminate any unknowns. Your plug wires are a big one. I'd go ahead and change them, especially if they're stock, and have in the neighborhood of 50k miles on them.

Another thing to check for, since the dealership removed the SC, is for vacuum leaks. Remove the cover, and check each fitting all around the SC. Can you tell my how much boost you get at WOT under load? Should be 8-9 on a stock setup from 92-95, a bit lower for 96-99. Need to know this.

I believe it was about 6-7, going up about the steepest hill on south US 65 there is from Springfield to the Arkansas line, something like a 17% grade, at about 77. I'm glad there was a concrete median between me and that state trooper on the northbound side.

I'll be leaving in about half an hour to go back to the dealership. I'll have more info and details then.

Do a HARD romp from a rolling start and watch that gauge. If you don't hit at least 8.5 to 9psi, something is wrong. I'm betting the dealer screwed up the vacuum fittings somewhere. You have a 94, so those fittings are old and prone to cracking from the engine/sc heat. Trust me I had to replace all of mine when I did my SC rebuild last year.

Well willwren, yet again, they told me that they couldn't find anything wrong and that it drove great. I did give it a WOT romp and didn't get anymore than 6.5-7 psi on the gauge. As far as the spark plug wires, I'm not sure if they are original stock or not. They did test them and said they were fine. As far as the vacuum fittings and lines, I was told they were fine too. So, I guess I'm wasting my time going to mechanics and should do all of this troubleshooting and repair myself. I remember the way it drove before and they don't. One of them who went on a test drive with me last week told me after we returned to the lot that my 94 seemed to have more power than his 96... which I kinda scoffed to myself and said... that'* wierd, wouldn't a series II perform better than a series I by default? I can see instances where his case would be true. Maybe his car runs "fine" too.
