engine/ SC problem!
I am posting this in General so many see it. It is not for my car ( I wish), but for a guy at work.
His SC bearing went out on it and he was recommended by the dealer to bring it to a specific garage ( yes the dealer wouldn't touch it). He had a new/rebuilt unit ordered and the garage installed it. They also installed a new Harmonic balancer, since the old one was finished.
His wife went to pick the car up on Wed and drove a short distance, she noticed right away that there was not as much power as it should have ( she coudln't break the tires loose, hehe), so He met her for Coffee and she told him ( the guy I work with) to try it out. As soon as he started it he niticed that the boost gauge was halfway in the + and this was at idle. It had no power and was boging down. He filled up with gas ( since it was low and he figured that was teh cause) but nothing. The garage now tells him that the harmonic balancer came off and dented the timing chain cover and screwed up the timing.
I think this is total BS.
I am not sure what year it is, it is in the buble butt era ( with a spoiler though). Is this even possible at all?? I know my timing chain cover on my 90 is aluminum and it won't dent it will break. And how can that harmonic balancer come iff if it was bolted down?? I mean it would have wipped out a few other things. Also I cannot see that screwing up the timing.
Any opinions on this?? I am at work right now and just foudn out about it a few minutes ago so of course I jumped on here before it got busy,

Whether it'* BS or not, the shop replaced the harmonic balancer, which they claim is the problem. So they should have a guarantee. It'* on the shop that made the repair to fix it, not your buddy. Hopefully they don't try to screw him over.

well my buddy has a 12,000$ van of theirs ( that they have for sale) and they are not getting it back till this is solved, hehe.
I just wanted some input on it to see what others thought about the problem, engine problem that is.

A simple vauum line disconected or connected wrong could do this, or a BCS not reconnected. There'* alot of sensors and lines to reconnect during a job like this.

yea the whole timing chain thing doesnt seem to add up, i would definately have to go with willwren on this one and say a vaccum line or the infamous boost control sylenoid failure.

I just had a chance to go talk to my buddy and he was telling me that after he filled it with gas, it wouldn't start. He had to let it sit for a bit then it started, but there was no power. When the guy from the garage showed up, the mechanic tried to move it, it was in drive, and my buddy was looking at the engine and could see the guy pushing the gas, but the car wouldn't move, so it was that bad.
The other thing he just told me was that when they were trying to figure out what was wrong, he said the belt was still on the car and all the pulleys were there, including the Harmonic balancer. Unless once it got the the shop, they were working on it and the Harmonic balancer came off.
This whole things sounds kind of strange to me, I think they scewed up the engine and are trying to buy themselves time to fix it.
BTW, it was only driven for about 5-10 mins MAX after being picked up at the shop, and it was towed back.
Well I won't be able to check on this thread till tomorrow afternoon, since I am on my way to the cottage in a few minutes and am coming back tomorrow, unless I get a chance to use my laptop.

Being fresh off a couple of SC swaps, a couple things come to mind.
First.. Vacuum
Second..hookup of the BCA and BCS, BCA has an adjustmental area, and both run off vacuum.
There didn't seem to be too many sensors on the S2. There'* the TB IAC, TPS and MAF. Coolant temp if disonnected, and evap purge and alternator... not necessary though. There are a ton of vacuum lines though..and I found many of the rubber connectors to be dry rotted and cracked when I got in there.
