Supercharger Question
 

Hi, I'm new to the forum and have a question regarding the Supercharger in my 95 SSEi with 148K miles. I hear a slight rattling noise coming from the nose cone area. Usually just at idle with the engine cold. Oil level is good. I've taken the SC belt off and rotated the pully and there is play both directions, maybe about a 1/4" or so. Is it a big deal to rebuild the SC? From what I've been reading in the posts is that the coupler should be replaced. What actually needs to be done (parts list) and can it be done while the SC is still on the car? Should I get the parts and have my mechanic do it? Should I buy a rebuilt nose cone and have that put on?

that is a classic sign of a bad coupler...its a ~$30 Fix....you can get the coupler from a few vendors....check the Links at the top of the page....you will also need 2 bottles of GM Superchager Oil...its no that hard....and there is no reason to purchase a whole rebuilt nose

The COUPLER is $30, but the other materials run you closer to double that to do the job right.

You need to remove the SC from the car to do it. You'll have to 'double-nut' or jam nut the stud going through the Alternator bracket to get it out. The only tricky part of the job.

You need a new SC outlet gasket, two yellow coolant bypass o-rings that go between the SC and LIM, a tube of red GM gasket maker, ONE bottle of SC oil, although I suggest you get two now to have one on hand later, and I also suggest you get a fuel injector O-ring kit while you're at it, since you'll have all of them out at the time. You should also take the opportunity to clean the Throttle body, so get a new gasket for that, too.

Should take a first-timer with home-wrenching experience under their belt about 4-6 hours. It's also a fun job that you won't regret tackling.

If you do all of the above, you're looking at 60-80 bucks. $30 will only get the coupler, and it's not a very good paperweight by itself.

I really appreciate the help. I was thinking about buying the parts from GMPartsOnline except for the Coupler I was looking at the one from RollingPerformance. Do you know if there is a part number for the yellow o-rings and gasket? I have the SC Oil part number. Might as well try and get all of the parts from the same place if I can.
