Twilight Sentinel Sensitivity

1996 SSEI

The twilight sentinel on my vehicle is working differently than in the past. It is now much more sensitive to light, meaning that the head/tail lights will turn on during a slightly overcast day. I made a shield for the light sensor from heavy paper and put in a very small hole in order to limit the light that the sensor sees, and this mostly solves the issue.

My question is, is the sensor bad, or is it likely something else in the system? Thanks for any answers.

Replace the sensor. It will continue to become more and more sensitive with age. Mine got to the point that it turned my lights on in near full sunlight.

Go to the wrecker and pop a couple. They probably won't charge you much if anything.

So Will, mine does the opposite on my 95 SSE. It takes too long for them to turn on. So does this also apply?

Thanks willwren for the reply.

Does the sensor just pop out the top of the dash, or do you have to disconnect wires from underneath?

Pulls right out like a fuse.

Also, I noticed that this time of year, the rays of the sun are at an angle which makes it difficult for the sensor to respond to.
