Default 1994 Bonneville Electrical Problems

I own a 94' Bonneville and this problem has been going on and on with no answers. Here she goes..........I start the car fine and will run great for a few days, I'll get in any given time turn it over no-problem but when I press the de-fog button the car stalls.

I turn the car over again starting good but try the power window and the same thing, the car stalls. Also there are times when this happens these problems stop after turning it over trying and trying and all of a sudden everything is fine.

Then there are times when this happens the car won't want to run , also the interior lights would blink off and then on again when I turn the key to Run Position.

Frustrating needless to say, love the car but cannot take this no-more, cannot rely on it everyday and would love to have this solved!!

Your help in this would be greatly appreciated!!
Cheers,
FatPat3

(Also forgot to mention I installed a new battery and alternator)

We need to know what happens to the system voltage when the car stalls... It sounds like a bad ground or bad connections to me. Try scrubbing the battery terminals and wires with a wire brush to get all of the corrosion off. It could also be a bad alternator or battery too, but sounds like you installed new ones.

How long have you owned this Bonneville and how long ago did these symptoms start? What happens when you apply the brakes or use your turn signals? If you turn on the headlights BEFORE you start the car, are they bright? What does your volt meter read? Like Fuddy said the most common thing I hear around here are the ground connections. So I would first make sure that your connections to the battery are clean. Also make sure the ground wire going to the block and the wires to the starter are also clean of any corrosion. Let us know what you find. Good Luck.

Thanks guys for the tips!!

You know I thought of the worst things could be happening with this and that and $$$$ it going to take etc. to fix the problem(*) but never did I once think of checking those Ground Connections, there pretty vital.

Ol'Timer the symptoms have been happening for awhile now but were very mild 2 years back, the car would just stall once and the rest of the year it would be fine. But in the last 6 months it'* been a nightmare. Using my turning signals are fine and the headlights are fine also, the brakes are fine to with no stalling there.

I do know though the motor has been neglected and has a build up of oil etc. down below, valve cover gaskets went and left a mess needless to say.

I've owned the car for a year now but known the original owner and the problems for years, ya know the common problems that is.

I'll let you guys know what happens when I check those things out,
Thanks again,
FatPat3

Well I'm back, I still never got to do those Voltage tests but I did clean up those ground connections, they were pretty dirty etc. Also cleaned up both positive and negative cables, they look like new now.

One thing I did notice though, and bare with me here I don't know the name of the part, was the grey connection (has many wires to it) attached to the coil distributor, it'* rectangular in shape and like I said it'* attached to were all the coils are.

There was a ground wire that came from those wires , it also grounded to the same place where the negative battery cable connected too, the engine block on the side. This wire was missing some the plastic coating wires are protected with and the wire was exposed, was touching metal no doubt on it'* travel under the coil distributor to be grounded.

I wrapped it up with some electrical tape so it don't touch any metal etc. Hopefully this was the problem but not counting on it LOL.

The car seems to run good since but really haven't seen enough convincing yet, it'* only been a few hours since the repairs.

Just letting you guys know whats up and the results, LMK if you can think of anything else I can ponder at.

Cheers,

Also check things like the chassis ground and engine ground.
The wire you refering too sounds like its on the IAC (which controls the spark plug coils).
