"security" light is always on

Any reason why the security light is always on? since i bought the car almost 8 months ago?
maybe someone broke into it a while ago?
i dont even have an alarm so i dont know why its on nor do i know if its at all important

For 96-99 Bonenvilles, the "security" light is supposed to remain illuminated for 5 seconds if the system is operating correctly. If your security light flashes once per second and the engine does not start, it is an indication that the VATS system module has sensed an open, a short, or invalid input from the resistor pellet in the key. If the car starts but the security light stays on, there is a different problem that has a series of diagnostic steps that can be performed. The FSM also says that this could be caused by a malfunctioning power or ground circuit.

Here is the original info I was referring to:

Can also be caused by cutting the wires for the VAT's system. Mine stays on now as it has ever since Nate cut the wires so I could drive my 95 home from Illinois last year.

Can you explain what you cut? I have had security light come and go and now the light stays on most of the time and sometimes doesn't even come on when turning the key. Then it may come on minutes later while driving.

Both of you guys should disconnect the tamper harness cable to the trunk lock cylinder (remove the carpet insulator to access). Just follow the cable up from the trunk lock cylinder, and disconnect the single-wire connection about midway up the trunk lid.

That cable is supposed to break loose when the trunk lock cylinder is slide-hammered for a break-in. Over time, the small tab that holds it to the trunk lock cylinder snaps off.

Mine is disconnected on the SSEi for this reason.

My car doesn't have the content theft protection. My security light is solely related to the VATS system. I'm waiting for it to not allow the car to start to do something to troubleshoot. I gegt the feeling this could last this way forever with the security light on. The car starts fine. About a year ago it occasionally wouldn't start on the first try and would always start after three minutes.
