Odometer Question/ 2000 SSEi
 

I replaced the instrument cluster on my 2000 SSEi with one from a salvage yard. I had hoped that the odometer info was stored in my car's master computer, and would display correctly on the replacement odometer display...but I found out that the odometer memory is built into the instrument cluster. So, my car that had 56K on it now has 18K.

Does anyone know if there is a legal procedure to reprogram the electronic odometer? Can a dealer even do it?

Just to be safe, I put the old IC back in thinking that my dealer might be able to reprogram the replacement odometer to the exact mileage that they see on the original, if it is still mounted in the car.

I've been told that the Autotap can read the mileage in a GP's PCM. Not sure is there is any relevance in your case...

I don't know about DIY reprogramming, but a quick Google search turned up a number of retailers selling and/or offering such services, so I'd imagine a reasonably-sized dealership wouldn't have any trouble doing it.

A quick note from Click and Clack:

"Most states require you to notify a buyer if you have reason to believe that the odometer does not reflect the actual mileage of the vehicle. That way, you're not actively committing fraud."

It might just be acceptable (if you don't mind the inaccuracy of having a wrong odometer) to run up to the last place you had your car serviced before you changed out the panel and have them print out a new copy of the invoice with the date and mileage on it. Staple it to a copy of the receipt from your new junker panel, and the next time you get your car serviced, staple that invoice to it too. Then stick it in your glovebox until you sell it. It might be over a few months' time, but I doubt a potential buyer would care about a few hundred mile inaccuracy. On the contrary, they'd probably be surprised you cared that much ;)

Yes, the PCM keeps track of the mileage, but it is seperate from the mileage the dash reads. I looked at the mileage on the SSEi once on the autotap, and the PCM read like 3,000 miles less than the odometer did.

It will tell you approximately how many miles are on the car, but it isn't going to give you the exact amount, or at least, not the same amount that the odometer reads.

I don't know about reprogramming it, but I've read that you're supposed to put a sticker on the drivers door next to the tire pressure sticker with the old reading (yours) and the new reading (on new cluster) and maybe the date.

Hey Shawn, the PCm probably was taking the mileage from the rear wheel sensors. The extra 3,000 miles was all from burnouts. :lol:
