Horn Problem
I have a 92 SSEi that I recently bought.
The horn is not working, you can press or squeze the buttons as hard as you want and nothing. I literally have to punch the stearing wheel to make the horn sound.
I checked with the dealer and my cost is $650 (List is over $700) for a new Air Bag as the horn contacts are on either side of it (with no way to access them).
I tried the scrap yards and found one in the correct color, after calling many.
When I installed it only one side of the horn works.
Is this a common problem ? Has anyone else had this problem ?
Any suggestions on a fix ?
I was thinking of using a rocker switch and mounting it to the side of the stearing wheel controls.
Thanks in Advance,
Dutch

Try taking the unit back off and make sure the wires are positioned correctly. I installed mine once and a wire kept the horn from working properly.

Ya the Airbag that came with the car when I bought it wasn't working properly the horn contacts were screwed. I took it out and tested it with a Digital Muli-Metre on the Ohm'* setting. You could press the horn buttons on either side as hard as you wanted and nothing.
It'* to dangerous to drive in a big city with no horn............to many idiots on the road.
I'm on my 3rd Airbag now. The 2nd one I got from a scrap yard, the cover had a couple of cracks & holes in it, so I returned it and got the one I currently have in. This scrap yard was the only one that had them in Grey out of about 10 that I called.
I tested it with the DMM before I installed it and I had a feeling that only the one horn contact would work. The side that does work you have to press on really hard to get it to work.
I might have to take it out and measure the resistance of each contact and wire up some thumb switches with some resistors to replace the factory contacts, as there is no way that I know of to access them short of deploying the airbag lol.
Thanks for the suggestion John Deere but it can't be the wire in this case.
I believe it to be a ground circuit that looks for differing resistance to sound each horn. When you press on 1 horn button it shows a 4 Ohm ground signal to the other end of the circuit were there is 12 volts, thus completing the circuit. It knows what horn to sound via the resistance that the circuit is seeing. Ex. 4 Ohms right horn & 2 Ohms left horn.
This is how I understand this circuit to operate, if I'm wrong please correct me.
Currently I only have the right button operating because the left button contact appears to be fried. The Ohms reading is OL (Out of Limits).
Thanks,
Dutch

I fixed my radio switches the other night on my steering wheel and magically my horn is being a pain...time to pull off and redo.
Just a pain to do it properly.
