Default Sunroof only moves a little when switched on

This is on my brother'* '03 Grand Prix, about 30k miles.

He hits and holds the sunroof switch and it only moves about a centimeter... hits the switch again and it only moves a centimeter.... hits it again and it only moves a centimeter, etc.

Holding the switch for several seconds after it has stopped moving doesn't do anything either but as soon as the switch is hit again it'll move just fine, but in very small increments. I've got my camera on me so I could take a vid and post it up tomorrow night when I get back home.

Sounds like a bad relay to me, but I really don't know. Searched the forums but no luck.

If it is a switch or a relay or whatever, I'll need to know the location of it too as I'm really not familiar with the car.

Thanks for any input

it is not sensing any motor movement. the motor has a built in counting mech. either that isn't working or the controller box isn't working. on the bonne it is back by the rear window. I am guess the same on the gp.

Rear window as in rear windshield and its located under it in the trunk? Is the other sensor located by the switch by the sunroof?

Any thoughts on how much either of those components cost?

the motor is located in the roofliner back by the rear window. the controller is usually located by the motor. $50 from a junkyard.

On the Bonnes, there is a control module in the back of the sunroof assembly that handles the forward and reverse voltage commands. The fact that you are even able to move the sunroof tells me you are getting at least the supply voltage to it.

Lets take this one step at a time. First, humor us...is the fuse good for the sunroof circuit? If so...good. Now, is the supply voltage coming from that fuse 12V (ignition and RAP positions)? If so, then the problem exisits in the roof somewhere.

Next item to check is the switch. There will be 3 wires...one is the supply wire, the other two are the signal...one for forward, the other for back, IIRC. If it IS a 12 volt feed, check to see if it actually is putting out 12 volts. If so, jumper between that wire and one of the other wires...just briefly though, to see if the motor torques up better than with the switch. If not...the module is either bad, or you have an obstruction in the glass track.
