Default AC system not receiving power (1995 Bonneville)

My AC system stopped blowing cool air suddenly about a year ago but I let it go because I lived in a cool climate. I have since moved to hot hot Vegas and have had it checked out. The shop just told me that the unit is not getting power and they were not able to troubleshoot it further since it was an electrical problem.

There is hot air coming from the vents so it seems the blower is functioning.

Any suggestions how I can troubleshoot this problem?

BTW, this is a 1995 Bonneville.

Thanks in advance

When you say the unit is not getting power, what do they mean by that? Anyway, turn your A/C on, pop the hood and see if your compressor is turning on and off. If it'* not, disconnect the clutch electrical connector at the pulley and use a test light to see if you have voltage at the connector. If nothing, you may not have enough pressure in the system to turn it on. I think someone disconnected the connector on the high side and jumped it to make it think it had the pressure. (for testing purposes only). Someone might chime in.

If the compressor is not engaging, you could also try swapping the A/C relay with the horn relay. Remove maxi-fise cover, then remove the "FUSE" box cover closest to the firewall. The A/C relay is the first relay from the passenger side. The horn relay is the second one in from the passenger side. Swap those two (assuming your horn works) and see if the compressor engages and if you have cold air blowing from the vents.

My best suggestion would be to go to someone better. That shop doesn't strike me as worthy of changing a light bulb.

If there is no power at the clutch.. they should follow that back and check the relay.. from there things are different depending on year (and I only have experience on 97)

Do you have a multimeter?

Yes I do have a multimeter.

I will try switching the relays shortly and get back with the results.

Thanks
