My first suggestion would be to tell us what year and trim level you have. Then put that in your signature by editing your profile. We can't give you any specifics until we know what you have.
I'll move your topic to the electrical section for you.

If the light sensor is not working, your exterior lights will not come on automatically at night.
You have 2 knowb on the headlight switch; the outmost controls the brightness of the dash, and if turned all the way to the right, will kick on the interior lights.
The one behind it controls how long the headlights stay on after the car is shut off

The light sensor has nothing to do with your dash lights.
ONLY the headlights/parking lights if TS is selected. Forget that. Your problem lies elsewhere.
Remove the headlight switch and inspect the electrical connector carefully. 97'* aren't prone to the melted connector problem, but it'* worth a look.

switch
I took switch apart, connector looks fine (no melting or burning). On the switch itself these a slight black discoloration, possible due to heat.I'm in the process of ordering a new switch and giving that a try.
