Daytime running lights don't work-Canadian Built car
Hey everyone....I have a 1995 SSE and trying to figure out why the DRL'* won't work.This normally wouldnt be an issue,but living in Canada where most cars have them,makes it abit of a safety hazzard as people almost rely on seeing them instead of your car....sad but true.
Have noticed other similar model years SSE'* and the DRL'* are on.
I have checked the fuses under the hood and the car is equiped with both sensors on the dash,the car does not have climate control.My father inlaw originally purchased this car new....he indicated the DRL'* never worked from day one,just didn't bother looking into it.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem would be appreciated.

There shouldn't be a "drl" sensor in the dash. There is a light sensor that detects when to switch from DRL'* to full low beams. The other sensor i believe it the temp sensor for the automatic climate control (am i right '92+ owners? I'm a '87 guy). If your DRL'* don't work, check the fuse for it first, then check the connection to the module under the hood (i think that'* where it is, someone else jump in here). I forget exactly where it is. But i wouldn't really worry about it, many MANY tests have been done and show that DRL'* have absolutely no effect on safety over cars that don't have them. My dad'* '96 olds had them too and i disabled them immediately (little tougher on his though). All they do is put unnecessary load on your electrical system and wear out your headlight bulbs faster.

Ok, there is a resistor located on the driverside fender, next to the horn. Has two wires going into it and looks like half an oval in shape about 10mm in thickness. As I remember from Randy'* 97 it is ceramic on the outside.

The DRL provides automatic on-off control of headlamps in response to the level of ambient light, and the position of the gear selector level, ignition switch, and head/park lamp switch. When the ignition switch is in "RUN" and the gear selector level is moved out of "PARK," the low beam headlamps imlluminate at about one-third normal operating intensity. The low beam headlamps turn off if the gear selector is returned to "PARK" or the ignition switch is turned from "RUN."
At dusk the low beam headlamps and exterior lamps turn on automatically. At dawn the exterior lamps and low beam headlamps turn off automatically, and the low beam headlamps again illuminate at reduced intensity. Exterior lamps may be turned on at any time. However, if the headlamps are turned on using the head/park lamp switch, this overrides the DRL system.

Diagnosis
Circuit Operation
The lamp control module is designed to automatically turn on teh headlamps and exterior lamps when it is dark outside. The module also keeps the lamps on for a selected amount of time after the ignition swithc is turned to "OFF."
When the ignition switch is in "RUN" and the lamp control module senses darkness, the module'* headlamp control closes applying voltage to the headlamps through the headlamp dimmer switch. The module'* exterior lamps control also closes, applying voltage to the front and rear marker lamps, park lamps and tail lamps.
Photocell input
The twilight sentinel/daytime running lamps photocell is a variable resistor. Its resistance decreases as outside light intensity increases. The lamp control module measures the voltage across the photocell and determines whether it is day or night.
Daytime Running Lamps (T61)
On vehicle equipped with daytime running lamps (T61), the lamp control module has an additional function, it turnes on the low beam headlamps at a reduced brilliance in daylight conditions.
When the lamp control module senses daylight and the gear selector lever not in PARK, the module applies a reduced voltage to the low beam headlamps. This reduced voltage is created by inserting a resistor in series with teh low beam headlamp circuit. The low beam headlamps are on, but not at full brilliance.
Lamps on Input (T61 Only)
The daytime running lamps mode disables anytime the module'* lamps on input has battery voltage applied to it. This occurs when the head/park lamp switch is placed in the HEAD position.
Park Input (T61 Only)
The daytime running lamps mode disables when the module'* park input has battery voltage applied to it. This occurs anytime the gear selector lever is placed in PARK.

Measure Between - For Diagnosis -- Correct Result
C1/"C"(PNK) & Ground - Check PNK for an open or short to ground -- Battery
C1/"H"(ORN) & Ground - Check ORN for an open or short to ground -- Battery
C1/"H" (ORN) & C2/"B6" (BLK/WHT) - Check BLK/WHT for open -- Battery
C1/"H" (ORN) & C2/"A5" (BLK/WHT) - Check BLK/WHT for open -- Battery
C1/"E"(RED) & Ground - Check RED wiring for an open -- Battery
Head/Park Lamp Switch: PARK
C1/"F" (BRN) & Ground - Check BRN wiring for an open -- Battery
(T61 Only) C2/"A7" (LT GRN) & Ground - Chekt LT GRN and PNK wiring for an open. If both OK, check Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch for an open or misalignment -- Battery
Gear Selector Lever: DRIVE
(T61 Only) C2/"A7" (LT GRN) & Ground - Check Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch for a short or misalignment. If OK, check LT GRN wiring for a short to battery -- 0 volts
(T61 Only) Connect fused jumper between C1/"C" (PNK) & C1/"G" (GRY) - Check GRY and TAN wiring for an open; check Daytime Running Lamps Resistor Connector for poor terminal contact; if all OK replace Daytime Running Lamps Resistor -- Lo Beam Headlamps at reduced brilliance
Hope this helps. I'd check that resistor first...then aim straight to this last test with a fused jumper. But that'* me. I think I got callouses on my fingertips...lol
