headlight switch meltdown need clip schematics
1995 bonneville w/o twikight sentinal
have new headlight switch & new clip. I need the wiring diagram for the wires that enter the clip. I've looked thru all the posts in the elec section but didn't see anything to my specific problem. My clip has 16 spots & I have 9 wires coming out of the harness to it. schematics, picture, drawn in cayon, i don't care anything at this point would help. thanx in advance, steve |

almost...
amost, but not quite the same. My connector only has 9 wires. Thanx anyway for the effort.

I'm confused.
Are you replacing the connector? If so, cut one wire at a time and replace to the same cavity of the new connector. Meanwhile, you are really asking that someone with a 95 FSM post up the cavity, wire color and description. We'll see if we can round up someone with a 95 book. |
b-oost, thanx for your quick reply. I inherited this job from my daughter. Her boyfriend pulled all the wires out of the melted connector, went to the junkyard, found a good connector, pulled all the wires out of that and brought it home to install. I guess it never crossed his mind to mark the wires, write down the order, take a picture.... nothin.
So, what you described is exactly what I need. I've got my fingers crossed. Thanx again Steve |

Steve...Do yourself a huge favor...get a 96-99 switch. There was something in the 95 switches that would heat up the connector and switch.

I'll second that motion. Mine is going also (on my 95, not the other green bonneville).

No. I have a 95 switch. No biggie though. I'll fix it after the Zilla comes back on the road, and replace my harness too (gotta go butcher one at the wrecker).

What's OEM part # for 1996 (or 95) headlight switch?
Thanks |

many thanks
thanks a million for the wiring diagram. I've wired clip and plugged in light switch but now only have headlights.Come to fing out that the car had other symtoms prior to the headlight switch meltdown.
I ran across many others on this site with the same problem in my search for the clip shematics. Back to square one. I'm starting with the fuses, moving on to the ground buses. Anyway thanks again. This site as been a great wealth of information and help. Steve |
If you share your issues, we can probably help. Usually from experience and save you a ton of diagnostic time.

Eureka!
All systems go. Turns out dash light fuse and tailight fuse both burnt. Replaced both and everthing is working fine. I'm hoping that they went out when the switch burnt up or during removal and replacement of the switch. ANyway thanx again I can tell you what a great resource this site has been for me.
Happy Holidays.. Steve |
Will the 99 head light switch work on my 92?

Happy Holidays.. Steve Hi, I'm dealing with the same issue on my son's girlfriend's car. I found the fuse box under the dash (left) but I don't see any burned and I can't be sure I'm looking at the correct fuse ~ the manual is kind of vague. Which fuses are for the dash and the taillights? You could help me be a hero! Thanks. Oh by the way. How do you get the switch out? Do you have to remove part of the dash? How do you do that? |
Tgunder... what year is your car?
95's are known for melting the switch and connector. If you have a 95, that is most likely the problem. To pull the switch you remove the gauge trip piece after removing the dash trim piece. |

Yep, I just learned about all of this myself. I ordered a new switch and as I removed the old one I could feel how hot it was. It melted the connector a little, not to bad. After replacing it I also found what you guy's said about the twilight ring not fitting the new switch. I'll have it on Monday. I'll post a picture when I get home later

Did you replace the connector or was it not bad enough to need a new one? So far..everyone I've seen is cooked.

The issue I was having with mine started with the twilight adjustment knob, when I would adjust it it would cause the lights to flicker if they were on. It has been doing that for a while now. It had just started a new problem, It would intermittently chime like the lights were left on with the door open. I decided to replace it after finding the Techinfo on it here.
