my 93 really getting to be a pain
Hiya all, new member but been watching the fourms for abit. Question.
I have a 93 ssei, and 2 days ago volt light came on , then 20mins later it died. So went and put a new battary in it and started right up but volt light on. If the alt is bad will the volt light come on? And when i change the alt if uts still on any other ideas?. I also checked all the fuses and the connections they are ok.
Does the volt light alwasy stay on when the the ingition is tured on? i never noticed before.
Does the bonnies have a voltage regulator like other chev? i know alot of other one have the on the back of the alts. Anyhow know there kinda noobie questions but havent had the bonnie long and love it, just tired and hate electric problems.

Ok, alternater tested ok, new battery, connections all good the volt light still on. Is there a relay or something else that could make the volt light come on and stay on while car runs?
It starts, runs, and at idle with no acceories it stays on. I havent drove it far or anything dont want to really have to put an alt. or another battery in it.
Is there a relay or fuse that could be a problem? Oh and if anyone could tell me which one it couldbe that be greats, everything in french on the car :* and i cant read or speak it, so the maunal is as good as scrap paper to me.Really pain trying to find anything in it lol.

Was the alternator on or off the car when tested? If it was on the car did they connect the tester at the battery or the alt? Do you have access to a multimeter?

I took the alt off and took it in for testing. I probally could get my hands on one.
I have noticed one think. the wire that comes from the alt to the postive cable has been cut and been wrapped around the main postice cable.
I thought it was normal but when i took the wrapping off was tight and clean. Could the battery not be getting the full charge from the battery? It was under the platic protectorand sercurted to the postive cable. I have had this car from sometime and never had a problem with it. Or should i just say screw it and just rebuild the alt at a proffessional alternator place? Its only 50bucks. To the point now thats a gallon of gas and a match is starting to look good lol .
and here a dumb question, what makes the volt idoit light come on? Just alt or battery problem?
Oh and to top it off today when going to the store just a 1/2 block away a few kids decided to play a funny joke and threw a brick in the road and when trying to avoid it , it bounced off the new lower sub frame bushing i put in and bagged it on the came up threw the floor and dent it up 4 inchs :*. i tell you i never seen kids run so fast when i stopped. I really think pontiacs dont like me lol. last one some idoit installed a remote starter at the dealer and fried my didgitail dash in my old grand prix .

I just hurt my brain. I had to read this 3 times. I'm going to stop trying to make sense of the brick, and try to make sense of the rest......
Disconnect and clean both ends of EVERY cable going to and from your battery, alternator, and starter. Black and red.

If the battery & alt. are both good that pretty much narrows it down to the cable/connections between the two. If you can get your hands on a volt meter check the voltage at the battery then start the engine & check the voltage again. Voltage should be a little higher while it'* running.

Stupid question here... In the 93 Bonneville does the PCM provide the Power to the Stator?
Did I even say that right?
I know on my 91'* the is a 12v source from the ignition iirc... On the 95 the PCM supplies the power to the alternator to lite the field
