ECT Sensor Code 14

Hi,

my SES is off, but the engine ever starts hard and is stalling/has rough idle.

So i checkes out with my diagnostic tool and DIACOM+

It says Code 14 Coolant Temp Sensor High Temparatur or short.

But when i check in Diacom all readings are fine. When the engine is cold i see around 10° Celsius and it goes with the Gauge up to over 100 and then the fan goes on.

So far everything is ok, but do you think that the ECT Sensor is broken anyways?

And which one is the right to replace?

i have two and both does have a yellow and a black cable.

One is under the Throttle Body and the other is on the right side behind the throttle body.

Another thing is that Diacom tells me that i had in history code 21, but it's not shown at the moment, so can i ignore that?

Also a bit abnormal is that diacom shows that i'm driving 217 KPH when i park in the garage ;)

I've seen that when i'm in park and i'm hitting the gas a bit the speedometer shows me that i'm driving without moving.

Is that normal?

Thanks a lot

Best Regards

The first rule of diagnosis is clear the code and see if it returns. You might be looking at an old code.

hi,

thanks for the quick response.

of course i cleared the code, but it shows it again as a "current" code.

due the problem that the car starts hard when it's cold or warm i think the must be a failure.

The only thing is that the rough idle is gone when the car is warm

I'm a bit confused right now.

i checked now with my normal octron scantool (works like the paperclip method) and it showed me only code 58...

but when i put on my Diacom it says Code 14.

i don't understand that, but the car still starts very hard and i wanna find out why.

Thanks for any help

Start by checking the fuel pressure. It should hold pressure when it's not running. If the pressure is bleeding off that will cause a hard start. You can also try turning the key to run but don't start, leave it there a second and then crank it. That gives the pressure time to come up.

Thanks,

checked that, but doesn't changed anything.

I'm still worried about that code 14, but if this code is realy set, shouldn't the paperclip method than not show it too?

Danthurs 04-04-2010 11:58 AM

It could be a stored code and no longer a active problem.

Knight-Design 04-04-2010 12:40 PM

yes, i thought so, but like i said i cleared all codes and checked again, when i check with the octron scanner i have code 58, nothing else, but when i use Diacom it shows code 14 as an current code.

if there would be a fuel pressure problem, where could i start to change parts?

but i think more that it has a too rich mixture. because i think i smell a bit gas after starting.

Do you know something about the thing with the speedometer, that it shows i'm driving when i hit the gas but i'm not driving?

another thing:

the hole which is under the parking brake cable under the front floor, shoul i better close it or let it be. because i wrote a lot about water problems in the car

If you have a leaky injector, that will bleed off the pressure, that's a hard start. That gas sits in that cylinder until start. That could be the gas you smell. Pull the plugs and inspect them. Look for a plug that is darker then the rest. That should be the leaking injector if that is the problem.

Fix any holes in the cabin, it should be for the most part sealed.
