Default Gauges abnormal at idle (oil pressure and voltage)

Had originally posted in the 1992-1999 forum, but still no luck. Here'* my original thread in there: http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...ic.php?t=49096
Anyway, i kept a good eye on my voltage today and it went from around 14 then dropped to 7 or 8 in a matter of moments. Then it goes back up to 14 again. This only seems to take place at idle, otherwise it hovers around the normal 14. Could it be a bad alternator? or battery? Im about to get those tested to make sure. Any other ideas?

Please go to Advance Auto or Autozone and have your charging system tested for free. That would be the best way to know about the alternator/battery.

Have you checked all your cables and connections?

Do you have an aftermarket stereo in there? GMs in general are known to come stock with just enough alternator to push the stock electronics. Someone a while back actually quoted or posted a link to the GM Bulletin telling dealers that voltmeter fluctuations are to be expected with aftermarket stereos.

Also, how old is your battery? If it'* getting weak, it'll have "dibs" on the juice your alt is putting out, thereby starving the rest of the systems.

Mine fluctuates a bit as well, by the way. It used to be really bad, but then I got a new battery...
