Automatic headlamp Disable?
 

ok, so on my 99 SSE it has the twilite sentnal feature, which is great...but whats the point of it, cause as soon as it comes out of park, the lights go on anyways. is there a way or some sort of wiring diagram that shows the light switch thats connected to the shifter.. cause for me its just plain annoying, I hate the automatic headlights..lol or if there is an easier way to disable the automatic headlights, please i want to know

Sounds more like DRL to me. If it's actually TS, though, it sounds like your sensor has failed. When they fail, they turn the lights on all the time, but it shouldn't be gear dependent.

If it's DRL's, try a search. It's been discussed here quite a bit.

I have to agree with will, it sounds like you mean DRL.

The difference is that Twilight Sentinal will turn the headlights AND tail lights on when it is sufficiently dark out. This can be disabled by turning the switch all the way to one side.

The Daytime Running Lights are only headlights, no tail lights. These should not be mistaken for automatic headlights if it is dark out because you will have no tail lights.

To figure out which one you want to try and fix, in the late evening find a place where the car is in the dark and check whether the tails are on or not. If they are, try turning the switch until it clicks off, then check the tail again. Once the TS is off, you'll have to manually turn the lights on by pulling the switch out. As stated before, if the sensor is bad, your TS should have the lights on during the day, meaning the tail lights would be on without you pulling the the switch out.

I heard that too, but i have already disconnected the DRLs, from what i hear from 97-99 i think, the headlamps turn on automaticly whenever the car is out of park, and it dark enough out to trigger them... im thinkin of hooking up an LED to that light senor so it always thinks its daylight out... but that might look a little tacky, lol

Yup, the automatic headlights can only be turned off when the car is in park.

Unfortunately (for this thread), I like them and have never tried to figure out how to disable them.

I think there was a thread a while back, though, about putting a resistor in line with, or in place of, the photosensor...

Jimmyfloyd is correct on his year. In the 1993 era.. you could totally disable to my knowledge.

However.as the years went on.. GM decided to assist us with our decisions. One member Cheetah has a workaround outlined in the below thread

It's a very simple fix. It would have been nice if GM would have made it possible to not have the lights come in darkness but oh well.

well i tried popping off that sensor like the pics showed, but i cant get it off..... i tried a reallly small screwdriver, and nothing, all i did was pop off that small black cap on the top....oops

You really need to get under it as much as possible and try it form a few different sides. It should come out unless something spilled in it sticking it shut, but its so far up in the dash I don't see that being a problem
