Aftermarket keyless not working properly...

I went to lunch today with some people from work and when I got back and got out of the car I pressed the lock button on the fob (it's an aftermarket fob, and came with a remote starter that was taken off for some dumb reason). I didn't realize one of the girl's had her door open still when I hit 'lock.' She shut it soon after, and ever since then the horn does not sound when I unlock or lock the doors like it used to. It would beep once when locked, and twice when unlocked.

There is also a red LED that must have been installed with it, on the dash. A red LED that flashes when the doors are shut and locked. I noticed now that the LED doesn't even BLINK anymore, it stays lit all the time (until I turn the car on).

What got screwed up here? I'd try unplugging the battery but it's pouring out right now. Thanks for the help.

Repeat what caused the issue...it probably uses a door as a trigger to toggle the feature.

bonnie94ssei 06-23-2006 08:56 PM

I tried doing it again, locked it with the fob with a door open. Still isn't working.

BillBoost37 06-23-2006 09:07 PM

What the name on the system.. we'll need a manual

bonnie94ssei 06-23-2006 09:11 PM

Shit, I stripped that sticker off remember  Maybe Jim remembers.

EDIT: the remote starter sticker was different, but the fob does say "Auto Mate" on it. :?

Generally speaking, the LED being on solid would indicate that the system is in Valet mode.

If this is the case, you should have a toggle switch or a push button somewhere that is part of the system. When this switch is filpped, or button pushed, while the ignition is on, it can place the system in valet mode, or take it out.

I could be way off, but this was my first thought when I read the post. I highly doubt that having the door open while arming the system has anything to do with your problem.

Jeff

I have no idea about what you posted  But I'll try and see what I can figure out tomorrow. Thanks.

Still isn't working right...one PITA after another

When I got the car Jim said there was a security system with the keyless entry. It does have a red LED on the dash that is supposed to blink when the doors are locked, but since it doesn't anymore and the horn does not work with it I have no idea what to do. It happened right after I locked it when someone still had a door open, so it seems like it should be related. Since the door was still open when I engaged the system something got screwy. I have no idea what else was installed with the keyless entry or where that stuff is. Would disconnecting the battery do anything?

This keyless was installed a long time ago, at least more than 2 owners ago.

NOTE: The horn does not work with the unlock and lock button. I also noticed today (after locking my keys in the car) that when I was able to slide something in the door and unlock the door, the alarm did not sound as it should either. I locked the doors last night with the fob, so the alarm should have gone off. Does anyone think that this could be because the keyless isn't working right?

Any takers on this problem?

I agree with Jeff, you have managed to put the system into valet mode. Different manufacturers have different methods for entering/exiting valet mode. Typically, the ignition needs to be turned on and the valet switch needs to be pushed or toggled. Can you at least post a pic of the remote? Someone might recognize it.

kristie_jeff 06-25-2006 05:17 PM

You will have to find the switch/button. Most systems have a silver little switch, like you flip it up and down (or side to side). Some people install them under the dash, on the front of the dash, in a console pocket or something like that. It will be screwed into a piece of the car. It is only about 1/2 inch long, maybe 1/4 inch in diameter.

The other posibility is a push button. Same deal though, it will be attached to a piece of the car some how. I will get a picture of them if I can find extras laying around.

And a picture or description of the remote will help a bit too, when we do find the valet switch.

*EDIT*
I found a picture of one type of switch.

I'll get a pic up soon. The fob is gray, the manufacturer is "Auto Mate" and there are 3 blue buttons and a red panic button. I check under the dash for this switch and let you know. Thanks for the insight!

bonnie94ssei 06-25-2006 06:58 PM

For now, this is a pic I found, pretty much the same. This is just a newer version:

EDIT: HERE IS THE ACTUAL FOB:

I guess I'll try and look under the dash for this switch. I'm hoping I'll find something.

That looks like it could be an older Ungo/Clarion system. It could be sold under the Auto Mate name at different retailers. The current model's remote looks very similar to yours:

MOS95 has an Ungo system in his car. Maybe you can PM him for specifics of valet mode or you can take a guess at the model number and look up the user's manual on the manufacturer's website. Valet mode should be very similar from model to model in the product line up anyhow.

I GOT IT!!!!

I took the driver's side hush panel out and was searching around for a switch of any kind. I looked for a good 20 minutes and I could not see any. Everything under there looked like it was from the factory. I almost gave up, I put the panel back on. I took the dash panel out because the LED was mounted in it. I traced the wires going from the LED (red and blue twisted together) and they got lost in a bundle of wires.

I looked and looked to where the LED wires were going since they had to lead to this switch I thought. I saw them go all the way up the the firewall and near a little black box with a 12 pin conncetor (still looked stock). I read the fine print on this box and came across the word "Valet." I was able to pull the box forward since it wasn't screwed on to anything and it was in fact the AutoMate system, "Model 401." :D

I FINALLY found a black push button switch wrapped up with the massive wire harness! I fooled around with it with the ignition on, but couldn't get it. I realized though that I didn't have the car ON, I just had it in the run position. So I started the car, pushed the button, turned off the car, LED was still on :? I pushed the button again, LED went off. I shut the door, pressed lock, and it worked!!!

Sorry for the story!

Thanks Jeff and Randy! You guys saved the friggin day. I never would have figured this out myself. I really appreciate your help.

-Pete

Yeah, most of the brands I have seen, you turn the key to "on", flip the switch and turn the key to "off"

BillBoost37 06-26-2006 09:43 AM

Ungo typically uses other triggers to make things happen.... that is why you found the button wrapped up...it's hardly used in an Ungo system.

Having had a couple Ungo's in the mid/late 90's I do know they were very cool...

Originally designed and made by Techne Electronics they were later bought up by Clarion to be marketed under the Clarion name.

kristie_jeff 06-26-2006 11:38 AM

So Bill, the ungo/clarion systems don't use the valet switch like other brands do? I have never dealt with one of these, only audiovox and DEI systems.

Glad everything is working now, Pete.

BillBoost37 06-26-2006 02:11 PM

Jeff...

It's the coolest thing. You don't have to look like an ahole counting horn beeps with every flick of a switch.

For example..if you wanted to change the locking style of the doors from doing nothing upon startup to locking 15 seconds after start, you simply turn ignition on..open door and press button A on transmitter. The multicolor LED that they use confirms your choice.

Very cool even back when....

kristie_jeff 06-26-2006 07:04 PM

Oh man, that sounds great. I know my neighbors LOVED me when I would program the audiovox alarms. :D
