Default passanger side lowbeam issue??

for the record, BC is now my homepage.

last week, i was on my lowbeam light quest; to find the best one. Silverstar'* being the best for my car and at night, if they die..whats 40 bucks a year or every other...but we wont discuss other users problems on this thread. Anyway ive noticed a possible problem.

Even before the silverstars went in, back in early 2007 i noticed that my passanger side low beam is constantly dimmer (by 10%or so) than the driver side. I took notice to this with all the bulbs i threw in there, all being 55 watts. Also it will get even dimmer (another 5% or so) when i turn on the angel eyes. the angel eyes 55W silverstar is wired direct to the fog lamp switch. I hope i didnt miss any other important details.

Any ideas? im thinking maybe a fuse is dying on me or something, or its just weird.

I'll have to check and post back, but something is nagging away at me. I don't recall which 2000+ Bonnevilles (GXP vs non-GXP) it is, but the DRL circuit uses a long length of wire causing a voltage drop to dim the headlights. There may be a wiring issue here or a failed component.

Gotta run... be back

of course
leave it to GM to cause me a headache lol

ddalder, that does make sense, the longer wire, is there a way to fix that (if thats the problem)
not that i really care, i just did the 9005 conversion and its awesome! but still annoying.
i wouldnt mind it working properly though.

BTW: whats the legal limit for how high a lowbeam can go. ive searched and found only 25 ft back and make sure your load is light, tires inflated and all of that hullabalo. Nothing on how high from the ground the low beam should be.

Sorry 'bout that. Right in the middle of this and somebody wants an ambulance... Then, they expect it right away! What'* with that?? LOL.

Getting back to your question. I've got to have a look at the shop manuals however I do recall from reading the theory of operation before that there are two different systems in use. The GXP DRL'* use the low beams while all the others use high beams. This I suspect is partly due to the low beams shutting off on the GXP when the high beams are switched on.

In the case of the 3.8L vehicles, the DRL circuit connects the left and right high beam elements in series. The voltage is now split across the two elements and the lamps run at half intensity.

In the 4.6L vehicles, the DRL circuit creates a voltage drop by running the supply to the low beams through a length of wire. This will result in them operating at a reduced intensity.

Having said all this and looking more closely at the schematics, I don't believe any of this is related to your problem (but it'* always good to know how things are wired up).

I suspect you have a poor ground. Here'* my rationale... The left low beam ground ultimately passes through C108 (a 7 cavity connector) and then on to G103 (the actual grounding point). The right low beam ground passes through C109 (a 7 cavity connector), is spliced to another ground circuit before passing through C102 and finally on to ground G401. There is no guarantee here, but since the right low beam ground passes through more connectors before finally grounding, I would first suspect a poor connection at one of these points. Wherever you have a poor connection, you will have decreased current carrying capability. You mentioned something about your angel eye fogs as well. This may be completely unrelated, but you may want to double check the wiring to these, especially if the problem is new since their installation. It would be worth your time to trace back through the ground circuit. I can try and post additional details and information as I find time. If this fails to correct the problem, we can look at other possibilities.

Your fuses should be fine (or you likely wouldn't have anything at all). As a point of interest, each element has its own fuse. There are a total of four fuses for the headlights. They are HDLOBML, HDLOBMR, HDHIBML and HDHIBMR (HD - Headlamp, LO or HI - High or Low element, BM - Beam, L or R - Left or Right). These are all in the underhood fuse block. All fuses should be 10A.

ehhem....well then i consider myself informed

the angel eyes dont dim at all, when they are turned on, the passanger (right side) lowbeam does dim alittle. I checked the connections this morning just now, yes i was awake at 5 am to go out and look. im dedicated...and coffee helps.

As far as grounds, do you have any idea where the passanger side is grounded to? maybe if any of the members have pictures of where to look so i might check the grounds. all input helps.

im prepping bonne for a weekend trip to the mountains, (that should be an awesome ride with my new 9005 low beams)
ill talk to you all when im up there later tonight. keep posting
