93 SSE security light on car won't start
 

this is the 3rd time this happend the last two times I turned the key in the drivers door(some one told me that mite help)and I turned the key in the ignition a few times and the car started.the key or the ignition mite be worn out.Is there a way to bypass the security system?Or is it a diffent problem?Thanks in advance.

If the VATS sees an incorrect resistance, the security light should be on solid. There is a three minute timer that prevents any starting during that time. Have a smoke, clean the car out, whatever, until the security light begins to blink again. If the light comes on solid again after another start attempt, try cleaning the resistor in the key and the ignition switch with rubbing alcohol. When cleaning the switch, dip the key in the alcohol and insert into ignition switch. Move key in and out several times to "wipe" the VATS contacts. I usually repeat this 2-3 times. Try this first as dirty contacts are the most common problem. If it persists, we can troubleshoot further down the line.

It doesn't take too much to confuse the VATS. Yeaterday I was washing my vehicles. I finished the truck and went to move the Bonny. I still had suds on my hand which transfered to the key and it wouldnt start. Three minutes later, I was able to start the car after wiping the key clean.

I did all you said no luck even disconected the batt.I have a viper security system 560XV with remote start it sounds like everythings working but no start. security light on solid. Could the viper system be messing with it, it's about 2 years old. Wy wife has had the car 3 years we never had a stock remote for the stock security system didn't even know it had one. can I soder a resistor in to bypass the key?

That was going to be my next question; if you had a remote start. There should already be a resistor and a relay or a self-contained bypass installed under the column. The VATS wires are very tiny and can be difficult to connect or make a good connection. I've also seen the added resistor(s) become outside the 5% tollerance allowed after some time. You could defeat the VATS all together by soldering or connecting the correct resistor to the VATS wires if you don't mind not having the factory security system anymore.

I would recommend temporarily connecting the correct resistor(s) just to verify that it is in fact a bypass problem rather than something else such as an ignition switch. After that you can:

1) Diagnose and correct any wiring or connection problem that might exist. Once you remove the trim under the columnl, it might be very evident why the system isn't working. You might see a loose wire or two.

2) Remove everything related to the bypass and permanantly connect the correct resistor.

One additional tip I have for you. Most remote starters come with what I call a "resistor pack" which contains 1 each of the 15 resistance values used in GM systems. If the starter is installed into a car without VATS or similar system, the resistors go unused. They usually pile up in the installer's toolbox. If you know someone who works at or are friendly with a retail store that installs remote starters, ask them to give you a resistor pack. This will allow you to use only one resistor rather than having to use a combination to acheive the correct resistance.

Thanks for the help. It was a bad connection at the resistor that was installed with the viper system. All good.
