Default Turn Signal Switch Came Off!

Greetings!

Yesterday I let my buddy borrow Bonnie for a week while his car is in the collision shop [he had a little run-in with a deer ]...
Of course, not long after he got the car, the turn signal came off in his hand as he was trying to signal!
I spoke with him [very briefly] late last night & he says he was able to re-attach it, but now cannot signal.
I will get more details later tonight, but I believe that after he got it re-attached, he may have been able to use the wiper/washer functions: just not the turn signals.
He did say that the Cruise Control works still.
[I don't know if the high beam function works.]
What sucks is that he lives 45 minutes away, so I can't just go over & troubleshoot this myself: I have to rely on what he tells me & what I ask him to try to do...
Like I said, I don't have all the details/facts, but wanted to get any ideas I could now, before I talk to him: has anyone ever experienced this? :?

Thanks

The turn signal stalk itself does "pull out" of the sterring column. But no directionals may mean that the cam inside the steering column is broken.

All he can do right now, is reinsert the stalk and make sure the electrical connections are connected.

Thanks for the quick response, Echo SSEI

So there is hope that he may have just re-inserted it wrong?
Any advise on what I should ask him to do as far as troubleshooting goes?
I feel helpless because of the distance involved
What electrical connections should I [try] to have him check to see if the cam inside may be broken?...& how hard would that be to fix/replace if it turns out to be the cam?
:?

There is always hope , but.....

It is really hard to say. The cam inside the stearing column is nylon( plasitc) and if something broke in there, then a replacement is the only true way to fix it and it involves pulling the steering wheel off. Not exactly a quick fix.

I mentioned insuring that elecrical connections are intact as a place that he can begin examination, but since the wipers and cruise control are functional, it sounds as if they didn't get pulled out.

I would still see if he can carefully pull it back out and see if he can see any obvious broken peices where the stalk inserts. Maybe, just maybe, it needs to be seted in better and with any luck, it may function again.

Kewl!...At least that gives me something to go on
It'* just frustrating to not have access to it myself
But, on the other hand, I don't want him getting into a wreck because the turn signals don't work
Is the stalk held in place inside the steering column with any special kind of bolt/screw/connector/clip?

And if it turns out that I do need to replace the whole thing, is it a Dealer only/ Big $$ item? :(

Ya know, I am not exactly sure how it stays in there, but I sust=pect it is a friction clip.

Here is a picture that shows some of the internals of the stalk from another post.

Hopefully this helps.

Not sure if this is a dealer only item.

OK, talked to my Buddy & here'* the skinny:
The stalk is in place just fine & the wiper/washer & cruise control functions work OK, so we know the electrical connections are still OK...
He says that as far as he can tell, the 'module' that the stalk snaps into is no longer bolted/being held in place...In other words, if he really tries, he can get the turn signals to work, but it appears that there is play where there shouldn't be where the stalk attaches, like something has come loose and so the part the stalk attaches to moves around instead of being fixed...
Does this make sense?
Could it be as simple as some bolt[*] loosening up after 15 years? :?

How Frustrating!

My buddy still has the car [hopefully I get it back this weekend, when his comes back from the collision shop], & he reports that a couple times it has totally died....
From what I've been able to get out of him, it sounds like symptoms of a bad battery/cable connection or grounds...I don't know if he'* taken the time to thouroughly take apart/clean the battery cables & grounds like I would do: he seems to think it'* related to the turn signal stalk issue [that where the turn signal stalk attaches is loose]...
Could that possibly be true?
Of course if/when I get the car back this weekend I'm gonna tear apart/clean the battery connections/cables/grounds, but what else should I look for? :?

Thanks!

Update: Finally got Bonnie back, replaced the wiper switch [the part where the Turn Signal stalk snaps into] which cost $60 at the dealer & all is well...while I was at it, I replaced the battery cables & that took care of the car dying issues
