My friend called tonight asking me what would cause his '92 SSEi courtesy lights to come on and go out randomly with the doors closed.

I told him I would check with the experts.

Any ideas? I'm trying to save him a trip to the dealer.

Thanks in advance,

I'd start with checking for water under the carpet. Or tapping on the doors while in the car.

The cars are known for water issues that cause all sorts of oddities. Also there are switches in the doors to turn the lights on and off. Doubtful..but possible.

The switch for those lights is in the door latch itself. See what happens if you blow them out with compressed air.

Having had a problem with someone putting my door together incorrectly and not putting that switch where it belonged.....I don't see how blowing air at it could possibly fix this situation if the door switch is the probem.

I was thinking there could be water in the latch causing a short.
