Default Torque Star Rims Rusting

The rims on my wifes GTP are starting to rust on the inside of the rims and a little on the outside. Can I repaint them or what should I do. I fear they could pose a problem in the future. BTW i'm in Wyoming and road salt isn't a problem.

It'* probably oxidation since aluminum will react with oxygen to create aluminum oxide.

Should you be worried? I don't know

Your biggest problem will be if the corrosion is on the inside of the wheel, tires may not seal perfectly and you'll have slow leaks. However most tire shops have a paste they can put on to help the seal, doesnt work 100% of the time though.

Same thing happened to mine. I had a broken caliper that started hitting something & the shavings that fell of & got stuck to the rim rusted it. Ive done nothing about it, but it can be fixed by polishing the rim. What you need to do is sand it down from a low # grit to a higher #. from like a 100 all the way up to a 1500 & then applie a metal polish to it.

well, I actually bought a set of GTP rims and refinished them myself.

I suggest taking the rubber of the rim to do it..

I used a dremel tool with a small wire brush attachment and cleaned the "rust" spots ( oxidization I guess ) to perfect shiney metal - then I used a 340 grit sand paper and scufed the entire rim - then I used a duplicolour paint prep ( eats any wax or grease left on the rim ) and wiped with a tack cloth ( to pick up any small particles left behind ) wiped with a dry cloth to remove ANY moisture ( with a second tack wipe )

Then prepped with some primer - then applied duplicolour Graphite wheel paint.

Long story short - of couse you can fix em your self. It takes work - buy MY results were awsome!

Maybe I'll post some pics..
