Stripping wax...

Dawn, hands down. It works great! That being said, Gold class is shinier then i remember!!!

big_boss2010 05-09-2004 12:08 AM

yep i have used dawn to remove wax

95SLE 05-09-2004 06:54 AM

I keep a small squeeze bottle of Dawn, blue original formula, in my detailing arsenal. Great inexpensive detailing tool.

TaylorD 05-09-2004 09:18 PM

A must before starting the Zaino process.

big_boss2010 05-09-2004 09:20 PM

yep

macho_mike21 05-09-2004 09:41 PM

just use it in place of regular soap?

Damemorder 05-09-2004 10:07 PM

So.... does that mean washing the car with dawn on a regular basis is bad?

big_boss2010 05-09-2004 10:10 PM

only if you want to wax it every time i'd think

Damemorder 05-09-2004 10:25 PM

o.... I'll quit doing that then....

big_boss2010 05-09-2004 10:26 PM

that's just a guess i'm not for sure but they way i do it is about every month or so use dawn and then rewax 8)

TaylorD 05-09-2004 11:24 PM

Yes, this is Bad. Nothing to protect your paint is left, some kind of wax/polish should be applied afterwards. Good dawn wash isn't bad once in a while, but you should seal your paint with right after.

PontiacDad 05-10-2004 02:21 AM

I dawn up before a complete detail and wax. Cuts out a lot of crap before a clay job too

macho_mike21 05-12-2004 12:40 AM

so I could use Dawn in place of a clay bar?

zzzzzeke 05-12-2004 08:08 AM

i highly doubt DAWN could wash away all the contaminants a clay bar can pick up.

givemebreak 05-12-2004 03:09 PM

claying is still very important...you will remove more then you think.....

The only thing I have done that removed as much as claying was the buffing I just
did with Meguirs's Mirror Glaze #3 cut...
was a smoooth squeeky clean finish after that i tell ya!

Dawn strips the wax, and it makes your claybar more effective, since it's not gummed up with wax.

It doesn't remove much, but claybar doesn't do much after the first time

macho_mike21 05-12-2004 09:42 PM

whats a good claybar to get? Im thinking of picking up some Meguiars Gold Class for wax and I want to know what to look for. I ususally use a little Dawn anyway when I wash/wax my car. I swear that stuff can get out ANYTHING!

givemebreak 05-12-2004 10:14 PM

I use ClayMagic from Autozone....$12.99 i believe

givemebreak 05-13-2004 03:03 PM

Wally world definately has it....along with most stores now

That thing sucks up gallons!
plus its always wet and ready to go...and you can machine wash it

Drifter420 05-13-2004 03:48 PM

K.. now I have to go to Wally World after work to look for it.. * Cross fingers that :canada: has them *.. and to confirm Dawn blue stuff like the dish cleaner.. whats the mixture you use to water? Just skip washin car with car wash soap and use dawn as replacement ??

MOS95B 05-14-2004 07:57 AM

Mos.. thanx.. Wally World didn't have Dawn.. stupid :x

MOS95B 05-14-2004 10:04 AM

Just about any dish liquid will work. You did look in the kitchen/cleaning area right???

Yes I did.. I even had my friend who worked in Wally World look for it.. hahahahaha.. sad part is she didn't know what it was..

macho_mike21 05-14-2004 07:26 PM

why am i not surprised...wally world is too big for its own good. I was told that the meguiars that works the best is the deep crystal 3step system (I think its called deep crystal).

asdfbadboy 05-14-2004 07:51 PM

All this talk about detailing...makes me want to get the wax done...hopefully its nice this weekend! ;)

BonneMeMN 05-14-2004 10:57 PM

Any dish soap should work, i think it's all the degreasers in them.

The absorber is great, water blades are cool, but we have too many ridges for that to be your only means of drying.

macho_mike21 05-15-2004 03:35 PM

old bath towels work great for the money  They are big enough you can get the whole car. Before I use one I use my hand as a squeegee to get the excess water off, it works well for all the ridges and stuff.

givemebreak 05-15-2004 04:01 PM

This is something I learned about bath towels awhile ago...
You must be careful which you use....

Alot of bath towels include a blend of polyester and nylon that will definitely scratch and leave swirl marks in your paint finish. The rule of thumb is to use high quality Brand Name large bath towels (Cannon or Fieldcrest) that say 100% cotton and made in the USA. Towels sold in bags in Auto Stores are not 100% cotton. Look carefully on the bag it will probably say made in Pakistan or Bangladesh or other foreign country. Do not use these towels. They will cause swirl marks and scratches on the paint surface. Always, remove the stitching around the towel prior to use. Bargain store polish applicators also contain polyester and nylon fibers and are not to be used. Also, when washing your towels, do not use any type of fabric softeners. Always use White towels. Do not use Colored Towels they contain dyes.

macho_mike21 05-15-2004 04:28 PM

hmm...i guess ill check what my towel is made of the next time i dry my car.

BonneMeMN 05-15-2004 07:06 PM

The absorber can be rung out  and used forever. It doesn't rot, or mold when stored wet either.

Yep! That is why a bought mine 6 years ago! lol
I love it!
actually I just chucked that old one...and bought a brandy new one!
they are the balls!
Wet and ready for action...Just the way i like um

Drifter420 05-17-2004 12:00 PM

The absorber worked well.. had it dry till it was a crisp.. put some water in it.. and came all nice and spongy and stored it in the tube. I notice the material was better then the cheaper ones that was half the price.. but nah.. if it last for 2 years.. I think it made it's money worth.. and you had it for 6?

Car was spotless.. wow.. clean the crap out of it.. then used meguirs quick clay system and the amount of dirt thats coming out :puke: holy imbedded.. thought it was clean.. but its smooth and finished off with only 1 coat of gold class  .. didnt' have time for another coat or two.. but will do that next time I wash the car... promise

But wow wat a difference.. will take some pics later today ( not as clean now though cause of driving to work
