make sure you sand it good. in all corners, because the paint will peel in those spots first. use 400 or 600 grit paper.

are you planning on brushing it or spraying it? either way do a good amount of prep work

After you sand it and wash it, you must use a wax and grease remover, such as PPG DX330 Acryli Clean or Omni MX190 Cleaner.

I briefly thought about that, but I don't think it would turn out like I'd want. I would probably want to spray it because I don't think brushing would turn out very well. I would want to put plenty of prep time in for cleaning the area and masking so that it doesn't look like a redneck job.

what "prep work" are you speaking of? as i said, ive never painted anything on the car. figure its good to start on this small and relatively inexpensive piece.

You need to clean the area properly including using something like an alchohol wipe down to make sure there is no wax or anything on the surface. And it'* probably a good idea to slightly scuff the area with a light grit sandpaper to promote adhesion of the paint. That will be the tough part with the lettering being fairly small. There is probably some sort of dremel attachment you could get to get in those tight areas. Then I would probably apply a painters masking tape over the entire area, and then cut out the letters with an exacto knife. Then spray it with a few coats of color and finish with a few coats of clear. Using a small brush would probably be easier, but I wouldn't be so confident on how good it would look.

You may or may not have noticed that I'm paint-happy.

I never really sanded it because I want to be able to go back to stock if I want to. I just used the Duplicolor paint pen and just filled each letter in. now three years later, it needs retouching but still looks great!

However, I'm not a paint-god so I'm sure others' advices are better than mine
