i heard of this years ago, and actually, not to long ago, was thinking about, what ever happend to that product..I wonder if it actually works? Intresting enough though.

I wish the MythBusters guys on Discovery Channel would test this stuff in a saltwater bath.

I bought an aerosol can of something called "Rust Off" several years ago, and it worked well. Sprayed in on small rust spots under the hood of my '69 Pontiac, and the rust eventually turned to black primer. Not sure if the stuff is available anymore; when I bought it I do remember a disclaimer on the can about the product potentially causing cancer... :?

There'* a product that'* been sold for years called "Extend" that does that. I've used it occasionally if I'm refinishing something that has a little surface rust on it. I use an electric sander or wirebrush (or both) to take off the surface rust and surrounding paint down to bare metal, then I prep what'* left with the Extend. They sell it as a spray and as brush-on. Where the metal has pitted you can see the Extend turn black where there was some rust the wirebrush couldn't get to. Then if needed resurface with Bondo or spot putty, sand, prime, and paint. In situations like that it'* worked fine. But if rust has eaten away lots of metal, spraying stuff on top of it won't stop it from eating its way from beneath it. Just be sensible. Most rustproofing sprays are a waxy substance intended to keep moisture out to prevent rust from starting, not to get rid of rust that is already there. You spray it on the insides of the doors and backsides of body panels. I think the JC Whitney stuff falls into this category.

Sounds like bullsh to me but I don't have the dough to try it out. I dont see how using electricity can prevent rust on your car. However if you ever find yourself in jail and they are serving salsa, throw it on your prison bars and youll be out in six years. Thanks mythbusters.

The description of the electro-thingy sounds similar to the "sacrificial anode" that everyone has in their hot water heater tank, and that steel ships, submarines, and ocean oil-drilling platforms use to keep them from rusting. A sacrificial anode is a very real way to keep steel in a corrosive environment from rusting, and all it does is provide a more reactive metal that gets eaten away before the steel does. If the anode is completely used up, then the steel will rust as usual. The sacrificial anodes are usually made of either aluminum, zinc, or magnesium alloy, and are usually welded or bolted into place on the steel they are to protect. The anode in your hot water heater tank is a long rod that screws into some threads at the top of your tank. While you can replace the sacrificial anode in your hot water heater tank after about 20 years, by that time your hot water heater is probably shot and is more cost effective to just replace.

I think they're relying on their electro-thingy to sound like a sacrifical anode to make it sound believable. But technically, anything made of aluminum on your car should already do this. In fact, there'* a company that makes a radiator cap with a magnesium sacrificial anode that hangs into your coolant, for the express purpose of saving your aluminum components, like thermostat housings and water pumps.
