dings and nicks on hood
i've got a BUNCH of little nicks in the front of the hood from rocks and the like, and it shows becuase it is down to just about metal, and all the way through to the metal on some of them, and makes it look like crap, specially becuase there is a ring of primer around where the rock chipped the paint. what is a good way of getting rid of these? i had someone yesterday tell me i could maybe get away with a sharpie or something like it, just to cover up the primer and it would be almost un-noticable until really close up, or should i sand them down, and paint them etc.? the bumper cover is also pretty messed up so i'm thinking about getting a new one, rather than f***ing with the old one, any ideas on price?

well you can always touch it up and wetsand. it really is the ultimate fix.
you need to put a dab of primer on the chips that are to bare metal. then fill with matching touch-up paint above the level of the surrounding paint and wait two days to really let it cure.
next you use a spray bottle with water and a little soap and wet the car and some 1500 grit sand paper on a sanding block. lightly sand the chip till it is flush wit the rest of the paint. don't use a lot of pressure, let the sand paper do the work.
now you will see all the sanded area is hazy, so you use a buffer with a cotton pad and some rubbing compound and buff that area. keep the pad and the area you are buffing wet and keep the buffer moving. you don't want to burn the paint. I suggest using the 3M compound.
get a cotton cloth and use a softer rubbing compound (like meguiars scratch x) and buff it by hand a bit till it is shiney as you like.
wax the area with a few coats and if you did everything right, it will look like brand new.
do it all the time to my cars, no rock chips

thank you very much for that detailed response. i'll have to give that a go sometime, it sucks right now though, becuase i have almost no time off from either work or school and when i do, it rains. but damn do i hate looking at the chipped hood and bumper. thanks again
