Just got an estimate for fixing the stone chipped flares
Just an FYI for anyone that may be interested in having their car fixed. I had mine at the body shop for my insurance work, and I had him take a look at the flares in the rear rocker and door, where stone chips hit and create havoc. He said it would only be $225 for them to fix it on both sides. He said they would leave the molding on since it might not go back on very well with the tape. They would repaint the molding on the door as well as the rocker. I didn't think that was too bad.

I did my own last summer. I had roadrash all along the rockers and flares on the Zilla. I've looked at several Bonnevilles over the years, and I think I've determined it'* more likely to be related to the speed you drive than the environment you live in.
Anyway, I rattle-canned mine ON THE CAR using a homemade cardboard mask, then applied a super-hard clear 'chip coat'. You have to be about 6" away from it bent over to even tell I did anything. Came out great, and it'* set to last quite awhile now.

I'm very impressed with the chipcoat. I used it on my strut bar after I painted it as well. It'* about 10x more resistant to 'tool chips' than the ceramic paint I used originally.
I noticed at WCBF 04 that Pdad and Silverbullet were uniquely different in this regard. I may have the two mixed up, but I think SilverBullet had what looked like an OEM chipcoat on his rockers (pebbled finish like mine now) where Pdad/Pmom didn't. Smooth clearcoat.

5 minutes later......damn. I can't find any reference to it on the internet. I'll try to dig up what it was in an old post or see if I still have the can.

Found the can, found it online.
Mar-Hyde Chip Stop
I found it on the shelf locally about a year ago (don't remember which store) and immediately thought of the pebbled texture difference between Bone-Evil and the Bullet that we'd noticed in 2004. So I got a spray can of my color from the dealer, masked off and 'dusted' my roadrashed rockers, then chip-coated with this stuff. Came out great. I suggest practicing a bit. The textured finish isn't really obvious, but it'* the key to protection.

I need some advice. I want to install the paint protection film made by 3-M and sold by Invinca-Shield on the front of my car. They sell the product as a do-it-yourself project. It runs about $300 for a 2002 330XI. It comes with a do-it-yourself kit. I don't mind spending the time. Does anybody have any experience installing this product? Did you have any problems? Would you do it again? Thanks!

I am not familiar with the 3M product, but there is another option available. Mar-Hyde makes an aeresol product called Chip Stop that is very easy to use and would be very much less expensive than $300. The last time I used it, cost was around $10 per can, I used two cans to do the front air dam and both rockers on a Maxima. You should be able to find it at any good automotive paint supply store.
