Hanging Pedal on 64 Bonneville

Hanging Pedal on 64 Bonneville
I have a 64 Bonneville, 389 4bbl, A/T, P/* with a pedal problem. The car runs and drives fine except when I release the accelerator. I noticed this a couple of days ago when I went to start the car.
I got into the car, pushed the accelerator down, and it didn't come back up. I had to wedge my foot in between the floor and the backside of the pedal to move it back up. I started the car and I noticed that the idle was higher and the pedal sits a little closer to the floor, which suggests that the throttle on carburetor is open a little more.
I took the car for a drive around the neighborhood. The engine operated like normal, it just won't slow down when I release the accelerator. Sometimes it hangs up for a half-second or more. I also noticed that when I floor it, I feel a slight binding in the pedal travel. Fortunately we have a long stretch of deserted road near the house for me to be able to get the car up to speed.
If anyone has any thoughts or ideas as to this problem before I start looking under the hood, please let me know. Thanks.

Welcome to the club. Love the old school stuff. It'* been years sense I worked on cars this old.
First, check the return spring. If it'* getting weak you may just need to replace it. Also check your cable, make sure it'* not kinked or making any sharp turns. If everything looks good, disconnect the linkages and move the butterflies, check for smooth movement. Also, and this one happened to me. Check the carpet around the peddle, it might be catching.
