that'* alright, seen a couple of vintage Bonnevilles with the
inner fender hacked open with a cutting torch to access the blower motor...

There are 2 ways to do this, the easy way and the right way and you seem to know both!
What most shops did back in the day was to make a large cross shaped slit in the inner fender well right behind the motor, peel the metal back, change the blower motor and fold back and heavily undercoat when you are done.
Depending on the shape of the wheel lip of the fender and inner well, you may want to go with the easy way.
