engine swappin
Hey guys, its me again...
As I was at the mechanic last week I got to talkin to the guy about swappin the engine out for something better and more power..I was wondering what would be the best swap for my 77..301..2bbl..Im clueless as to what would fit and be the best bet..Through my searching i found that GM used a wide variety of engines and whatnot throughout these cars. So any ideas?? Im just looking for a good engine with a lil more power and something that would fit without "too much" work...A nice drop in bolt up,if possible, would be great...Thanks again.
also anyone know of a decoder for my vin # by chance or something that can help me read it..

The best swap would be for a Pontiac V8 (350, 400, 455) from the mid 70'* as it should pretty much drop right in. You could use an earlier motor, but you will have to get different mount brackets to fit into your car.
You could also use a 77- ? Olds V8 as GM used them in that vehicle, so mounting it should not be a problem. Olds and Pontiac V8 share the same starter on the same side of the car.

I remember a 350 conversion/writeup in a Olds FWD conversion that used the THM350 tranny. Was pretty much a bolt in conversion. This site has alot of info and engines for those wanting to toy with swapping. Engine Swaps
