Default Headlight Assembly

Well, the wife'* 2011 Chevy HHR had a blown headlight, low beam, driver'* side.....

So I thought I would just go out there and easily replace it.....you know, do a reach around, disconnect the harness, unlock the bulb....never mind a reach around, her car didn't even get a kiss.....

How does the headlight assembly come out? Do I access it through the inner fender well? In the engine compartment, I found what looks like a flat head bolt(size of a quarter) with an "allen" depression in the middle.....it goes in at an angle, and could this be the magic bolt that holds the assembly in?

My wife is laughing at moi.....some former GM tech......but I worked on mainly Buicks and Pontiacs, not Chevys.....it'* cold out there so I want to do it the easiest way....

what a pain looks like inner fender removal, most of the newer chevs have clips or something so the housings just pop out

Thank you......With temps in the single digits at night, and only teens during the day, it looks like I will have to take all the fasteners out, instead of just a few and prying the fenderwell plastic just enough to get my arm in.....otherwise that plastic liner will snap, crackle and pop.....and we all know what'* going to happen when I try to take those four plastic retainers out.....better get replacements in advance( probably should sell them with the bulb)......

This is only the second car I know of where you change the bulb from the fenderwell......at least it'* not a nightmare like a Lucerne...

Woh that looks like so much fun!! Who designed this with out a fender door for bulb?
In the video I noticed a nice scrape on his hand from the fender liner.
Better wear some long sleeves, even some thin gloves would be good to have.
Installing the new bulb must be also unique. You don't want to touch the glass on the way in.

Well, did it outside in the cold.....developed frost bite of the fingers......that plastic fender liner does not want to bend in the cold......you have to be a contortionist....was not easy to turn the socket to get it out..... had a harder time, starting it back in, but rotated easily......amazingly the plastic retainers did not break on removal....wife made me a batch of blueberry muffins for my endeavor in the cold....of course I played up the "frost bite" just a little....

Good work Gus. Frozen fingies not good but blueberry muffins are good.
You know what say about bulbs, when one goes the others not far behind.
Get one more and do the other side in the Summer!!
