I have a neighbor that is restoring a 1967 Camaro RS and he has the hood mounted tachometer from his 1970 Pontiac GTO that he totaled many years ago. He is replacing the engine with a new GM LS3 engine. My neighbor is almost 80 years old and has zero computer experience so I told him I would try to help him.


I have contacted 10+ companies I found online to find out if they could modify the vintage Pontiac tach that he already has to work with a modern LS3 engine, or buy a new hood mounted tach that will work with an LS3 engine. I thought it would be simple to find a hood mounted tach that can read the RPM signal from the LS3 engine but not 1 company that I contacted can help me.


My neighbor bought a hood mounted tachometer from Summit Racing that he was told would work with his LS3 engine but it didn't work so him and I are back to square #1. If anyone can help me find a tach that will work my neighbor will reward you with a $50 Amazon gift card.

The 60'* early 70'* sbc used a wire off the coil to guesstimate rpm except for the corvette which used a mechanical drive off of the distributor shaft. Your LS3 I assume has a coil for each cylinder so coil pick up is not an option for you, you'll have to get rpm readings thru the pcm, which I assume you had to install, you may need programming to get the rpm.

Thank you for the response. The car isn't mine it'* my neighbors car so I don't know if he installed a PCM or not, I suppose he would have to have it. So are you thinking he can splice into a wire that can directly attach to a tach? Now I just need help finding a hood mounted tach that will accept the signal coming from the PCM.....any suggestions?


Where is the PCM typically located?

I would find out what his plans are for ignition and fueling before getting too far in to this. Being old school, he may have overlooked something, or may have a plan that can work in your favor. My brief interwebbing suggests the LS3 can be configured many different ways.

So I don't sound like an idiot what would the options be for ignition and fueling? I know he using the EFI system for fuel, what other options are there?
