thats a good idea. i was thinking along the same lines becouse rod dont normaly just go from starting it.( this is a very good low mile eng) the only thing i wondered about with timeing chain or gear is that it seems to run ok other than the knock. but i will try tail pipe trick & pay a bit more att to how it is running. im also thinking that being i already have valve covers off mybe ill leave em off for the start up. i wouldnt mind watching valve train while its running. thanks guys

I didn't mention it because he said he had pulled the covers and checked the top end but you're absolutely right. Been there done that and busted a couple on a few drunken teenage nights long long ago.... LOL
