I'm new to the forum, and from what I'm seeing I see a lot of really informed people, so I'm hoping someone can suggest some help.

A couple of days ago, while I was driving, my radio gave out a loud burst of static, and a few seconds after that, all sound cut right out. After that, I've discovered that the audio system appears to have stopped functioning altogether:

- the radio still can be turned on and off, but the volume control and preset buttons don't function.
- There is no "calibrate" or theftlock warning on the radio.
- the turn signals and warning chimes are also disabled.

This last one leads me to believe that the radio itself is not the culprit, but whatever controls the audio system since all audio is now not working.

Driving the car without any sound at all is eerily quiet and actually puts me more on edge! You'd think the silence would be nice...

I have not done any work on the car recently (other than cleaning the seats and mats, that couldn't have affected the audio) so I don't believe that it could be a wiring issue. However, I've decided that maybe you may be able to help me find a solution before I have to take the car in to the dealership.

Would you please let us know what Year, Make and Model car/truck you're having this problem with.

Just for grins, could you look on your vehicle Option Label and see which Radio Option you have - should begin with the letter U like these:

Ahhh, right, I guess that information'* important! It'* a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt.

As for the radio code, I'd have to check in on that and get back to you later. It'* a standard AM/FM radio with a single CD slot and an external input.

One of the many possibilities.. your model year may be set up to alarm and chime through the driver'* door speaker (only). If this speaker has self-destructed.. or been damaged, that would kill your warning & signal audio - possibly take out your whole sound..

I've seen this same type of problem happen with many 80s and early-90s Delco stereos, sometimes they just quit and either put out static or nothing. Buttons usually stop working, and although the radio acts like you're changing stations (for models with tuning *****) the frequency displayed never changes (but there is the split second mute as if it was working, I don't know the best way to phrase it). I'm going out on a limb here by assuming the newer Delcos act the same way when they give up.

Silly question, but does the clock work at all, and if it does, does it retain its settings? Does it reset to 1:00 every time you turn the ignition on? I've seen similar symptoms caused by a bad "clock/mem" connection or blown fuse that powers the memory on the radio. Sometimes you'll lose all radio function, sometimes just a flaky clock.
