Default 97 going into limp mode

I have a 97' 1500 with 5.7 in it and I keep losing my overdrive and 1st seems like it'* going into a limp mode. Today I found out that it won't start in neutral not sure if that has anything to do with it. I can turn the ignition on and off a few times and it'll be alright but it'* becoming annoying

Any check engine lights? Do you have an external transmission cooler?

Moved to Chevrolet for better visibility.

Limp mode is usually a sign of excessive internal slippage, and generally means it is time for a rebuild.

Not starting in neutral could be a bad neutral safety switch. The switch should be on the drivers side of the tranny where the shift linkage attaches. You will need a 13mm socket and a 15 mm socket . You will also need a heat gun, the electrical plug is glued into the connectors and must be warmed up to be removed. These rarely go bad but they do get out of adjustment, or the shift cable bracket can get bent and get them out of adjustment. Loosen the two 13mm bolts and move it slightly in both directions and see if this fixes your problem before you change it out.

Beyond that, one of the gearheads who knows more about transmissions than I do will have to chime in.

Yeah I believe so and my check engine light is burnt out.

Also there'* no pattern to it I can be fine for a month and out of no where it'll happen and sometimes it'* everyday. Sometimes when I turn the key on the light that tells me I'm in park disappears or flickers.

Before we can continue, it would be helpful if you could at least get it checked for any stored codes. Then we can go from their.
