Default Secondary Air Injection Relay Problems

I have a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer. I received a P0410 code. The motor/fan stopped working. I replaced the relay and that corrected the problem. One week later I received the same code and the motor/fan stopped working again. I pulled the relay, it was extremely hot (almost burned my hand). It had moisture in the relay caseing. I replaced the relay again, made sure to seal the caseing, and one week later, the same effect. I pulled the relay, it was extremely hot again. It had moisutre in the caseing and it melted everything in the casing. What caused these relays to heat up and malfunction?

motors draw too much current when they have to work hard for what ever reason. like obstructions in the line check valve stuck, motor getting dirty or just wearing out.

If it is getting that hot, something is wrong. The fan should only run for a couple minutes at initial start anyway, unless they changed something since the 2001 4.3 Vortec. Either you are cycling the key a lot, or the system is pulling WAY too much power, which should pop a fuse, or it is running longer then it should.

Randall,

Thanks for the feed back. About 8 months ago, the fan/motor started making a very loud whinning noise. I figured the fan/motor would eventually go out but I was going to wait for it to totally go out. Prior to the old relay burning out, the fan/motor would cycle like it should; cold start motor would turn on, run for about 45 seconds, and then shut off. The fan/motor would not cycle again until the car returns to a cold start. I have gone thru 2 new relays, after the installation of the new relay, the system would cycle properly for about a week then the relay would burn out again. When I say burn out, I can not pull the relay with my bare hand, gloves only. It seems that the relay starts malfunctioning while the fan/motor is not operating. With this additional info, any ideas?

Tom

you can see if the motor is drawing to much by disconnecting the fan and see if the relay still gets hot

maybe the fan is wearing out and not running the way it should, if its getting jammed and stuff it will drain more power than it needs too, makes me wonder why it didnt burn a fuse though...

PS. this is in the wrong section, mods please move

All the best
