hey all, to make a long story short, i need a new abs brain. any idea on where to find it on the darn car?

i put it on the computer at midas the other day and it kicked back codes for every wss, which are all new within the last two years, and i had this issue before with all stock bearings.

problem is the car seems to think im slipping when im not. it seems to always kick on the lights as soon as you start the car in the summer, but in the winter occasionally it will not set the codes unless i do something like turn on my hid headlights creating a sudden draw and it will ding and the trac and abs lights will kick on. other times the headlights dont do anything and the abs will just kick on when making any type of stop whether it be slow and gentle, quick or otherwise. in any case i usually end up in the middle of the intersection ticked off and scared for my own and passengers' safety. usually after an incident like that, the abs will turn off and kick on the lights.

i dont wanna just pull the fuse because that would kick on the brake light and i would be oblivious if something bad were to happen to the braking system.

so. any idea where the abs brain is? if so do i have to open the system to remove/install it? alldata is of no help to me on this. thanks alot!

Did this start after you installed the HID'*?

Last I knew, the controller was mounted on the ABS pump assembly itself. Which would be down stream of the master cylinder.

Yes, but it went at the earliest 6 months after the hid lights. Would I have to take off the whole manifold to replace the abs computer? Thanks a lot

Does it only do it when the HID'* are on? Some HID ballast (especially the cheap chinese ones) can emit so much RFI(radio interference) that it can cause havoc on a data/sensor circuit. Think of fluorescent light fixtures and old AM radios. BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ or neon signs.

nope, actually most of the time it sets when the key is first turned so it dont even ding. i hardly even use my headlights because i dont drive at night much. wrapped the light sensor in wire so the car thinks its always daytime and i did the drl delete.

Ok, at least that eliminates the HID'*.

I have the FSM for 97PA and do you think they gave a good description where the heck it is located ?. I found a diagram but it almost looks so Kindergarten that it appears to be near the drives brake area LOL!!!

ya got me. lol. ill have to run the part number on that part tomorrow.

i did notice a manifold of brake lines, which is what i assume is the abs valve thingy. not sure if thats where the computer is though. if that thing on the firewall is it i will be jumping for joy. cant really find an easier part to replace. lol

REMOVAL PROCEDURE




CAUTION: Do not pry EBCM/EBTCM. Be careful not to damage seal (if reusing module). If seal is damaged during removal, repair damaged area using GM P4V 123456739 silicone sealer or replace EBCM/EBTCM.

IMPORTANT: You cannot repair the EBCM/EBTCM. If the assembly is faulty, replace the EBCM/EBTCM as an assembly.

Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Remove the air cleaner assembly and the PCM cover.
Remove the EBCM/EBTCM harness connector.
Remove the front EBCM/EBTCM bracket from the vehicle (3).
Remove the EBCM/EBTCM center bracket mounting bolt (4).



IMPORTANT: Do not twist the assembly.

Remove the 4 EBCM/EBTCM to BPMV bolts (1).
Remove the EBCM/EBTCM by pulling rearward until the internal connector disengages (2).
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




NOTICE: Be sure to reconnect all harness retaining clips that may have been disconnected during the removal procedure in their original positions. Then perform a visual inspection of the entire harness checking to make sure all retaining clips are properly connected.

IMPORTANT: When replacing the EBCM/EBTCM, you must recalibrate the Magnasteer.

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Clean the EBCM/EBTCM seal and BPMV gasket surface with alcohol.
Tighten the 4 EBCM/EBTCM to BPMV bolts (1) to 4.5 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) .



Install the front EBCM/EBTCM bracket (3).
Tighten the EBCM/EBTCM center bracket mounting bolt (2) to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.) .
Connect the EBCM/EBTCM harness connector.
Install the air cleaner assembly and the PCM cover.
Turn the ignition ON leaving the engine OFF.
Perform the ABS Diagnostic System Check.

considering the fact that i cant calibrate the magnasteer or do the system check, it looks like i will just be pulling the fuse :/

Ya well that box on firewall is the Stepper Cruise Module.

Whoever published this 97 FSM should be fired for their poor illustrations and descriptions.
